How are text adventues in the style of Zork doing in the grand sceme of things? I heard they were coming back, and I saw that PC Gamer actually reviewed one.

I didn't even know about that ;-)....Zork and those types of game, hard to say how they're doing today per se.

It would be fun if it did though. Might teach those big 3D game makers a thing or two about what "should" be in a good game. They got the graphics, sure, but sometimes, the story lines, ewwww...and that's even if it's based on an awesome movie.

Zork and a lot of older games will still be around, thanks to Java. Nobody can ignore the clasics, and now Java, Macromedia Flash, and others will keep them remembered.

Here's to Zork. Cheers :)

Wow, i never realized how exciting text games are. I had no idea how to play, and to my surprise it actually recognized my random inputs, lol.

I love text games! The original Adventure (first text game) was just awesome. I have a copy of it some where on my PC. Zork is also great.. I have a php link, I'll post it later.
The only text game that I have played long term is BatMUD. Which is an online text like game. Really great, http://www.bat.org they also recently released a really cool User Interface for the MUD.

don't forget the qb based text adventure Westfront PC

http://www.geocities.com/dunric/westfront.html

I prefer an emulator running the classics , or even using my commodore 64, instead of a re-make.

I'm taking a little jaunt into the text based relm of development. My next game, if I do finish it, will be a text based adventure, but will be presented as a computer program that you're using to hack a server and peruse some forums. I'll be releasing more info later on, but right now, I'll just say that things start taking a turn for the dark in your computer hacking adventure.

By the way, Nixon, I love your pic!

That java Zork seems dodgy. They seemed to have stuffed something up with the rooms. If I go north then south I don't end up where I started.

Ah, Text adventures are one of my favorite types of games! :D

Java Zork worked fine for me. About the n&s stuff, I always had problems myself walking around. Sometimes the directions don't work right. (Same goes for Adventure)

Nothing wrong with it. It's not based on a grid, and if you mapped it out on paper and played around quite a bit it would make sense.

It caught me off guard when I first played, becuase I mapped on grid paper. But trust me, there's method to the madness. :)
