The Future of Windows 7

I bet that once Windows 7 comes out, (to replace the dead cow we call Vista), there will be a programming language with it.

Every time Windows comes out without a programming language, all the magic falls out of the OS, and all the poop shines through.

Windows 7 Basic anyone?

What makes anybody think that Windows 7 will be better than Vista?

1) It will still be 64 bit

2) It will probably not have a virtual dos system like XP

3) It will just mess up .NET programming which has already turned into a nightmare!

4) It will be more expensive and so will all of the new software!

5) Kiss VB and DOS goodbye............

The new Windows 7 is a repackaged Windows Vista.

If you really want to see what windows 7 is going to be you can get a Betaq version here:
www.microsoft.com/windows/windows-7/

This will allow you to try it until april 10.
Also they are only giving an unlimited amount of downloads until Jan 24 so if you want it make sure you get it before then!

LOL, a Beta? NO WAY! I generally wait 2 or 3 years until SP1 or 2 comes out. Microsoft tosses out garbage and waits for bugs and other problems to be reported.

Recently a friend updated to IE 8 and lost all of her Email and downloads. She had to revert to IE 7.

You cannot trust M$ period! I got XP SP2 on my newest Dell and it has a virtual DOS that actually works. Unlike SP1! Windows 7 will not work with DOS well and I will not jump into that sewer!

Of course they're waiting for bugs, that's why it's beta. The best way to accumulate a good bug report list is to do an open (or "wild") beta. Hell, I'm still running XP SP1...

Windows 7 won't be any better for DOS apps than Vista is, since that particular part of the OS hasn't been touched. Older Windows-based applications should run better though, and I caught wind of the notion that there will be better OpenGL support. Of course, Microsoft's new "pay as you play" function might creep into this Windows...too early to tell, though. I also heard it through the grapevine that they're toying with some kind of new recompiler for older applications...supposedly, some applications can be "rewritten" in memory to work better with modern CPUs. If this is true, you can be sure as hell that it didn't come from Microsoft themselves...

Maybe there will be again a microsoft basic embedded in the OS?

M$ is developing a language called SmallBasic (http://www.smallbasic.com), and someone is asking about embedding it in Win 7

Read about it:
http://services.social.microsoft.com/fe ... BvFeLq0%3d

Maybe they think that a programming language for kids will have the same success QB has? (Well, when I was a kid, I'd be intrigued by a QBASIC with LOGO features...)

Anyway, a limited programming language is always better than no language....

I mentioned Beta, but unfortunately many new OS's from M$ are not fixed until LONG after the release date. I'm still getting a lot of updates for SP2 and refused to get SP3 because of all the problems with it.

As a SP1 user, your updates are over with. A classic example of M$ just moving on to make more money. A new OS means big bucks for M$!

I won't be jumping on the "pay as you play" bandwagon either! Half of my software is pirated already, lol. Sure hope I can still use it.......

In response to Angros: SmallBasic only has 17 keywords. It is based on the .NET framework also. It will not be included in Windows 7 either. Already ruled out, so somebody asked for it in the first SP already, lol. I may take a look........

I'm staying with Windows XP only until Two Lords is finished; after that, I'm going to FreeBSD full-time, where I already have my own dedicated BASIC compiler and all the C/C++ compilers one could ever want. If I need to run Windows there, I'll just run it through vmware.

You can get updates, but they're all combined into SP2 and you can't download them separately.

That's good! I wonder if M$ will make a CD of all the updates so that we can redo an install of XP? Currently, I have to download about 60 updates after a reinstall.

I could actually download update files for Win 98. So I kept those archives.

I just tried windows 7 in Virtual PC. I wasn't very impressed but when I tried Qbasic in full screen mode it let me! I don't know if this is virtual PC or Microsoft has decided to bring back full screen DOS. I hope the latter. If anyone has actually installed it please let me know if it works for you!

That's pretty interesting...maybe they went after more legacy compatibility fixes than previously stated.
