Does anybody have a 98 machine?

I have a Dell Windows 98 SE machine that uses a PS2 keyboard.

I unplugged the keyboard and tried to use it on an XP machine. When I plugged it back into my 98 machine it no longer lights up or works!

However Windows says it is working correctly even when it isn't even plugged in to it!

Any ideas?

Have you tried booting your machine in DOS mode?

You should be able to do that using mouse only, from windows.

If your keyboard works in dos, it's a setup/driver problem, otherwise, it could be an hardware problem.

If it's an hardware problem, you can determine if it depends on computer or on keyboard: you'd have to test the keyboard on another computer, and to test your computer with another keyboard.

I tried another keyboard and it works fine.

However Windows 98 never said a word about the keyboard one way or another and neither did the BIOS. I never set the BIOS to ignore an error either.

I tried a boot disk and it never said anything either, but I couldn't do anything in DOS without one!

I guess the XP machine killed the keyboard. It never did fire up. It just sat there. The CD's didn't even light up at boot time. The only thing running was the power supply fan. I'm gonna check the voltages later. It has two 60 Gig hard drives and a graphics board.

@First Post

If you unplug a device such as your mouse/keyboard and plug it back into the system while the machine is still ON, you wont be able to use it til restart.

If this isn't the case, then I have no clue.
