Support suggests that I may have a VIRUS so they recommend running MSE or Windows Defender, both installed on my PC I thought. Only problem is I COULD NOT FIND EITHER OF THEM! So I download AVG and run MalwareBytes to no avail and try re-installing MSE as the icon is completely GONE from the Startup programs.

MSE IS NO LONGER BEING USED as Windows Defender is now ENHANCED WITH MSE ALSO!
Then TELL YOUR FREAKING SUPPORT PEOPLE FOR CRYING OUT LOUD! I found out the HARD WAY!
HTF do you RUN Windows Defender? There is no mention of the program ANYWHERE!
Image
NOT in Installed Programs, Apps or anywhere else. No EXE file runs it in its Program Folder either!

Found it mentioned in Windows Services, that's all so HOW would I RUN IT ON PURPOSE to do anything?

Reliability has not been Windows 10 forte:
Image
The Facebook and Twitter Apps often just disappear all of a sudden.

The Motorola Bluetooth Mouse was difficult to get to work last night too! First had to remove it.
Then it asked me for a passkey and the BT remote keyboard couldn't enter that either!
Enter anything like 0000 I guessed, but I hit 11111 and apparently that was good enough.
BT OBEX fails constantly according to this test, but the mouse and keyboard work OK so far!

Found Windows Defender Settings next to Update Settings:
Image
Down below these settings is an Exclusions list too.

Clicking on the Use Windows Defender Link brings up a box telling me it is TURNED OFF!
Image
NO WAY TO TELL HOW TO TURN IT ON! Settings LIE! BEWARE OF FADED OUT SETTINGS!

Now if ONLY I could find Security and Maintenance listed in Settings????
Image
NOWHERE TO BE FOUND! This is unfortunately TYPICAL of Microsoft to use terminology to BS users!

TRY good old CONTROL PANEL(right click Start menu), SYSTEM and SECURITY, Security and Maintenance:

Apparently AVG took over and Windows Defender gave up without a fight! What good is it?

Twitter App quit overnight again, but Facebook App is still running.

Still waiting for a notification of a FIX for my Pictures folder Inheritance problem!

Got tired of the same old farm picture background so I went to get a new theme in Control Panel:
Image
The original theme was the single Unsaved Theme on left. Links to more on right side of page.

Right clicking a theme allows for deletion.

Some themes also affect the window and App colors in the Start Menu:
Image
I'm comparing the MSN Weather App against the Accuweather App to see if it is more accurate.
The MSN weather seems to be at least 5 degrees lower all day. Predicted highs are never reached!

Simply go to this link and choose the themes you like and download. Just click to install them!

I think I found out why sleeping never asks for a password again:
Image
Also Cortana displays a Microphone when my headset with mic is plugged into the laptop.
My laptop has a separate jack for speakers and mic. I've seen some new Dell's without it.

Cortana seems to be having a harder time understanding me with the microphone than my phone.

Windows 7 to 10 32 bit laptop:
Laptop reliability tests from August 11th until the 21st show problems continue:
Image
Cortana issues are new and Twitter App quit again overnight. Not sure what SSDP Discovery means...

SSDP Discover Service and Universal Plug and Play Device Host

Speed issues caused me to reboot yesterday. So far everything seems OK today.

My 64 bit machine would NOT WAKE UP so I had to REBOOT and it installed UPDATES and then
ONE DRIVE was LOST so I had to redo it with a new folder where the old one was!

Image
Well lookie here! ANOTHER PICTURES FOLDER. This may be my problem with the laptop too!

My Share links are now gone at Photobucket in Chrome:
Image
Still work on laptop version so far so have to go back and forth to post pictures!

Camera Window Picture program STILL loads when camera is plugged into USB!

The DISASTER CONTINUES! Now I have to use IE TAB (blue E top right) which Photobucket SAYS it does not support to get the picture links:
Image
Reliability is a disaster too! For some reason it HATES the Photos and VAIO Entertainment Common Service I CAN'T EVEN FIND!

I finally decided to remove Sony's Play Memories because Canon's Camera Window works well on the desktop.
The laptop runs Play Memories while Camera Window 32 bit never updated and just quit working altogether!

The Action Center brings up notification bars from Twitter and Facebook too!
Image
Plus a lot of stuff from the Microsoft Community that might be helpful if questions are ever answered...

Facebook App on laptop quits and forces me to enter my email and password EVERY TIME!
Twitter quit again today too, but M$ must have decided to QUIT REPORTING them in Reliability reports
so that Windows 10 looks better I bet...

Comparing the Microsoft Weather App(left blue), here it reads 9 degrees LOWER than AccuWeather(orange):
Image
The LOW temperatures must be M$'s answer to Global Warming... just LIE! But 9 degrees?
While the MSN Settings allows you to set it by Zipcode or present device location,
AccuWeather only sets by device location and you cannot have 2 locations running at once!
So you could have TWO MSN Weather temperatures that are not really true anyhow!
Verizon Fios said that temperature was 88, and opening the MSN App said it was really 82...

Coincidentally today the laptop's AccuWeather App failed and I never knew it. I seldom open them, just look:
Image
Finally went 3 days without incident! Temperatures today were also 5 degrees higher in the AccuWeather App.

New study shows more people love Windows 10 than hate it

Yesterday marked only the THIRD DAY since August 6th that there was no Windows 10 or App failures on the desktop PC:
Image
The Twitter App keeps on closing itself. Especially when running the M$ Email App to read Microsoft Forum notices.

Here is the Windows 10 Settings, Connected Devices listed with my 3G - 4G Franklin 700 NDIS Stick:
Image
Note that there is also an On-Off switch for metered connection downloads. Can save some 3/4G data too!

The UBEE 4G NDIS stick downloaded a bit of software drivers and shows up as Network 2 in WIFI:
Image
Once I leave my residence I can usually get 4G nearby, but then my WIFI would be gone anyhow.

LAPTOP MOUSE DISASTER! Suddenly tried to use 3 different mice and NONE WORKED!
Not even a Logitech mouse with its own USB adapter. Lenovo one could move pointer, but no clicks.

After a push button only reboot I had to remove the BT Motorola Mouse to reinstall it:
Image
Despite BT Settings telling me it WAS PAIRED, it did no do anything! Not even move.
Once removed, the mouse is quickly found and paired again without any code entries.

Reliability took another hit today! When is this BS gonna STOP?
Image
Apps seem to get updated daily with no rhyme or reason, same as no answers from M$!
Those Check for Solutions links always come up with NOTHING!

Laptop Facebook App Disaster!

Facebook App quit working like this and it never refreshed:
Image
Closed it and it took down Twitter App with it!

Then the Start Menu REFUSED TO COME UP even with the Windows Key.
A Right Click allowed me to Restart without a cold boot.

After a reboot I lost WIFI and Blue Tooth. BOTH TURNED OFF BY THEMSELVES!
Image

Things are getting WORSE, NOT BETTER!

Today I got this reply about One Drive, like this stuff is old hat already:

Hello,

Your question on Microsoft Community has received a reply from PranavMishra5582.
Title: Strange UUID10000000 Administration ID after loss of One Drive

Reply
Hi,
I suggest you to reset OneDrive and check if it helps you. You can follow the steps given below to reset OneDrive.

1. Press the Windows key + R to open the Run Window.
2. In the Run Window enter the following: %localappdata%\Microsoft\OneDrive\onedrive.exe /reset
3. Click OK. The OneDrive system tray icon on the desktop should disappear and re-appear after a minute or two.
4. If the OneDrive system tray icon does not re-appear after a few minutes, do the following. In the Run Window Enter: %localappdata%\Microsoft\OneDrive\onedrive.exe

After reset it done, right click on OneDrive icon present on the System Tray and click on Settings, then click on Chose Folder and make sure that all the folder which you want to sync must be checked.

Let us know if you need more help from us.

Read this reply on Microsoft Community.

--------------------------------------------------
Now I again have ONE DRIVE running in my program task bar list:
Image
One Drive was always disappearing from the System Tray so hopefully things will get better!

PlayMemories was also updated during the catastrophe for whatever reasons and set to camera again.
On a positive note, PlayMemories placed the above photo into a NEW daily Pictures folder!
Pictures Inheritance setting has not changed back on reboots, so I hope it is finally fixed forever!

Hopefully things will get better now that One Drive is working, M$'s money maker...

Later on the SSDP Discovery Service stopped working too. This has occurred several times before.
So far it doesn't appear to have discovered much of anything that I have noticed...

Laptop Update Disaster...almost

Another day and another WARNING! TWO Windows 10 Updates at once was too much:
Image
Bluetooth OBEX Service interruptions continue to occur. Old driver perhaps? Mouse problems separately.
The second update readily installed in the Update Settings without a reboot request.
Facebook App crashed again upon being waken up from a Sleep, but no mention...
FB and Twitter Apps quit again without mention... what good are they?

Warning on 27th was for Google Update Helper which also said it installed successfully at the exact same time...

More strange laptop happenings

May need to reboot...

Went to use my PrintKey folder in Windows Explorer and could not click it to view it:
Image

Task View button gave me this and then my user folder came up the same way:
Image
I was able to stretch the folder back to normal box area and then view file pictures.

PhotoBucket has problems with Shockwave too!

Also if you stretch a window down too far, you may be able to reset it using the full screen option
in upper right corner twice to bring it back above the taskbar.

Computer has gotten slower since waking from Sleep so I will reboot for other W10 update now...
Image
Hey M$, this reminds me of your Kernal errors that told me absolutely nothing. How about an App name?

BTW, here's my screen saver without the bubbles now:
Image
I guess Bubbles is gone forever! Sad...I now just hit the power button quickly for Sleep mode

Also the MSN Weather App continues to lag in temperature even when it actually predicts it otherwise:
Image
That Dell Latitude is a bit less than my Inspiron and Windows 10 has gobbled 40 GB already!

THIRD Windows 10 update and restart today!

Berger, thanks for posting in detail the problems you've been having. I've been listening to the hype (official reviews) for weeks, and been dubious.

While my own computer is far too old and hardware limited to "upgrade" (*cough*), the better half set aside her aging XP laptop (looks to be about the same hardware age as your inspiron) and got a Thinkpad last year that came with 8.1, and after using xp for a decade, she hates the 8 interface. I'm trying to decide whether to go to "Classic Shell" for 8, or attempt to wean her to Linux, or take the 10 "upgrade" for both machines for her use only. (Does this remind anyone of the "New Coke" debacle when the customers hated it, and going back to "Classic" they replaced sugar with much cheaper corn syrup and upped their profits?) We're on a slow and data limited connection, so just getting the gigabytes of updates would require 18 mile trips to town where the data is fast and isn't limited. My, how that sucks.

I can understand Linux having driver issues with hardware "designed for Windows", often proprietary, and having to spend a few hours getting things to work on any given box, but Mikrosloth? These are the folks who set the specs, who invest millions of man-hours in coding and testing. What does it say when their own reliability measures show that they fail? And the repeatedly proven fact that M$ products don't play well with any possible competitor, which seems to get worse with every iteration.

And 40GB, just for an operating system and a few "apps"? Holy hard-drives, Batman! My first system had an astoundingly large at the time 40mb HD, and 4mb of ram. It came with DOS 5 and the then brand new Win 3.0 (then qualified for the free 3.1 upgrade / fix). The box I'm typing this from has a stable, reliable OS (winME (with all possible patches) for its better USB support than 98SE), dozens of programs (not apps), thousands of user files, and is only using 3.2gb of a 10gb drive. The Windows directory measures at 1.90GB. You're a smart guy. Maybe you can tell me why it takes roughly 20 times more "operating system" to provide a "better user interface"? Maybe you can explain how 2,000% more code isn't linearly if not exponentially more susceptible to hacks and viri? Hmmm. Would back doors and "content monitoring" have anything to do with it? Would a EULA that reads like you cede all your rights if you accept it, be an acceptable price to pay to search the internet, or to compose an essay, or send an e-mail? Thanks Big M, but I'm done playing that game.

The only reason Win10 will get market share is the OEM deals they make, and the fact that so many people are still too comfortable in a windows interface to make a move. Maybe 10 will be a tipping point. Maybe 11 will, but I just can't see this sort of idiocy going on ad infinitum.

Have you considered Linux? I understand that some Dells can be a bit more difficult to make work because of odd hardware, but it might be worth a try. It very well may take less time and frustration to work the kinks out of a version of Linux with excellent on-line forum help, than playing "whack-a-mole" with windows issues and idiot tech support. Try a Live CD of Ubuntu, or Puppy, or Knoppix, or Arch, or Red Hat, and if you find one that works well with your hardware, take a spare HD and put that flavor of Linux on it, so if you ever want to go back to a strictly Windows machine (to remind yourself of what you aren't missing), you can. Just remember to get your terrabytes of updates (patches and fixes to fix the previous patches and fixes) when you put it back in, that is if 10 is still supported then.

When I get some more spare time, I'm finishing putting Puppy on this box - already have it on a bootable SSD, it just needs a few tweaks to get the peripheral hardware issues worked out, like the wireless card I use for internet access, then call me "free". I might even get another 16 years of out this machine. :D

Well my XP laptop is a bit close to the lowest to upgrade and those computers I have compared prices
to all still use Windows 7. Apparently even re-manufacturers are wary of Windows 10 at this time, so
you are on your own...

A Core 2 1.6 gHz with 2 Megs of ram should run well enough on Windows 10 and an Win 8.1 should run a
bit better. I would not upgrade if the hard drive is over half full or at least 160G. Files just keep getting
larger every year! If she hates the 8.1 interface, she should give it a shot, you can always revert back
within a month according to M$ rules.Personally I'm going to keep trying until September 11, then revert
if things continue to go south.

I don't think that M$ can stop me from reverting back at a later date as I just bought the Windows 7 disk
and have every right to use it anyway I want on one computer. Upgraded another XP desktop to 7 also,
but Win 10 won't upgrade.

I just installed Windows 7 on a 160 Gig HD, and it took close to 20G with a few programs I added. My
desktop 64 bit 7 machine has fared a little better as this Reliability report shows below:
Image
I installed Win 10 on August 6th so it has had an extra 5 days. The laptop reported more problems today,
but less severe.

Here's the original 64 bit Windows 7 machine's HD before Windows 10:
Image

After Windows 10 installed 3 weeks, actually decreasing 5G since original install:
Image

The laptop got a little slower yesterday after 3 updates and 4 reboots. That would make me give up
sooner if it continues!

That's another thing, her XP laptop was already resource (mostly memory) burdened after getting service pack 3. That's why she decided to get a new one. From what you and others have said, 7 seems to be a LOT more practically functional than either 8 or 10, even if it is already at end of support.

We should have taken the downgrade right off the bat.

I like Windows 7 a lot, but I am retired and this stuff is more a challenge than anything else. I would have no
problem going back to Windows 7 as it actually sped up my laptop and fixed some things like sound and graphics. It also fixed my old built in XP Bluetooth device. I was using a USB one until then.
Image
You can get Win 7 on Ebay for about $50 if you think that will help.

Most XP's can be upgraded to 2G of ram. I would not try less with Windows 10 and it might refuse to install anyhow. My laptop seems to use 90% of memory all the time now. CPU looks better though and it has seemed faster until yesterday. Boots and shutdowns take a lot longer than W 7 so far. Sleep is fast waking up.

Does it have the Windows 10 upgrade Icon yet? It will test things first. Graphic drivers are a stopper too.

I have found it was also necessary to go back to Dell and install some mouse, touchpad and sound drivers for XP. They seem to work just fine even in Windows 10.

LOL, I still have my Windows 98 SE machine, but I rarely use it on the web anymore. IE 6 messes things up.

Her 8.1 box has been out of service for the past couple months with 1TB HD failing (strange how the bigger the drives, the sooner they seem to die). Finally got it to my favorite geek to salvage the personal data; still have to source a good quality replacement HD and reload, though not quite sure how to go about that without source disks or an unlimited high-speed connection. May just get a copy of 7, though not sure if that will work because supposedly the 8.1 "key" is now embedded in BIOS. Any clues?

The XP laptop already has 2gb ram (replaced recently), 1.6mhz processor, and runs hot, processor going between 25-80% with 5 or so tabs of Firefox running and perhaps OO or Word, throwing page faults like no tomorrow. It is not happy. I'm not happy listening to the fan attempt to keep things cool. And yes, I've cleaned the dust out.

If you still have your W98 machine, why not use Firefox V2.0.0.20 (the latest, greatest, last version for win9x)? True, it doesn't handle current Javascript at all well, but it gets me here (and the few other out of the way places I go to around the web) with little problem, with JS disabled. I believe you can still get V2.0.0.20 from oldversion.com. Just for giggles, you should load it and try it out instead of IE6. You may just have a functional back-up back-up machine when some latest patch on 10 makes an epic fail on your other 2. ;)

Cloning can take up to 2 hours. Did it on my other XP Pro desktop that I never upgraded yet.
I just put the new drive in with the old one and cloned it. The old drive was failing until I did that.
Have 4 computers other than the 98 and 3 spare hard drives. USB enclosures can be used for laptops.

My laptop was running hotter on XP than with Win 7 or 10! Win 7 ran the best so far. I was getting XP updates
with a hack until I decided to try Win 10. Get rid of MS Office as it is a memory hog. I have Office 2007 and
I'm debating ever installing it on 10. I still have the old XP 80 G hard drive intact as I found a 160 G for $28.

My Mom's old XP one was upgraded to 7 but Win 10 said no way. Found a 250 G SATA hard drive for $12.
Had to convert it to a Basic drive to install Windows. See the first page of this thread.

Try Newegg Flash for hard drives. They often have sales and whole computers for a lot less.

You can probably find a BIOS upgrade to use with the new OS. Never heard of the OS being in there.
These downloads can be validated and accessed using either a retail or OEM product key. Some OEMs placed stickers on the bottom of their devices with the Windows product key on it however, in recent years they have begun embedding those keys in the system BIOS. You will need to retrieve your product key from the OS before clean installing so you can use it to download the ISO from Microsoft. Retail keys are usually available on the retail box, disc or in an email you received if purchased electronically.

I use a program called Belarc Advisor (Free) to view the product keys for software, including Windows, that is installed on my systems.
How to download the last three versions of Windows officially at no cost

After re-installing Windows 98 every year, I finally found a way to backup stuff and I don't want to
take a chance downloading much of anything. It's a piece of history now...
