Day 9 on laptop and things remain the same. Taskbar did hide while watching AMC app fullscreen.
Will reboot today...

Microsoft: Windows Phone is not the place to do “new and exciting things”
Really, no kidding. Microsoft did not have to give up on Windows Phone users, users did that already!

Here's how Microsoft will support Bash on Windows 10
In case anyone had any doubts, this is not "Microsoft Linux." Nor is this Microsoft enabling Linux apps to run on top of Windows.

Microsoft is characterizing the move to put Bash on Windows 10 as an expansion of its command-line tool family, rather than a replacement for the work the company has doing in-house.

Bash will be built into the Windows 10 Anniversary update, which is the new name for Redstone 1, and due this summer.
Microsoft now lets you turn any Xbox One into a development kit
After installing the Xbox dev mode on the Xbox One, you can register your console as a development kit. Then, you can just launch the “dev mode” app to turn your Xbox into a dev kit. It’s a good way to preview Universal Windows Platform apps, as well.

This is an important step for Microsoft, as the company has had a few issues with its policies with independent developers. The Xbox 360 was a major platform for indie developers, with breakthrough successes like Super Meat Boy, Fez and Braid getting released on the Xbox 360 and PC first. But things changed quite a bit with the Xbox One.

Microsoft begins selling Azure IoT Starter Kits from $50 to $160
There are an Adafruit Raspberry Pi Kit, an Adafruit Feather M0 Kit, an Adafruit Huzzah Feather ESP8266 Kit, Seeed’s Intel Edison Kit, and the SparkFun Thing Dev Kit.

“These kits allow anyone with Windows or Linux experience to quickly build IoT prototypes that leverage all Azure’s IoT offerings,” Microsoft said in a statement. Each kit comes with a development board that’s compliant with the Azure Certified for IoT program, along with sensors, actuators, and tutorials.

Day 4. Laptop taskbar has been up since Day 2, WIFI seems to disappear in Gmail once in a while...

The registry bloat that slows down PCs won't be a problem with UWP apps, says Microsoft.
Centennial” is the name Microsoft has given to the converter or bridge between existing Win32 apps—the traditional .EXE files of just about every app on a Windows PC—and the new .APPX format of the Universal Windows Platform apps, the format the company is pushing developers to use for Windows 10.

The idea behind Centennial is that developers should be able to take their existing Win32 apps, run them through Centennial, and end up with a UWP app. Ronald and a colleague took Evernote’s Win32 app, performed the conversion, and ended up an .APPX version just a minute or two later.
Wonder how those apps will affect my taskbar?

Was out of town rest of week using my 3G/4G USB stick for internet with no problems.
Restarted laptop after Windows died while testing the longevity of a replacement battery.
Predicted times went from 4 - 1/2 hours to a half hour in 2 hours. Suddenly shut down at 30%.

Microsoft bangs another nail in Adobe Flash's coffin with a big change to Edge
According to John Hazen, Principal Program Manager Lead, Microsoft Edge, the future build of Microsoft’s new browser will "intelligently auto-pause content that is not central to the web page".

Essentially, what this means is any vital Flash content -- like video and games -- will play as normal, but "peripheral content", like Flash animations and ads, will be automatically paused. If you want to activate them you can, but it will be your choice.

Taking this action will, Hazen observes, significantly reduce power consumption and improve performance, while preserving the fidelity of the page.
Microsoft announces new issue tracker for Edge, submit your bugs now
Microsoft has just announced a new issue tracker for Edge that will allow Microsoft engineers to better listen to user feedback. The new tool has been designed from the ground up and is directly integrated into Edge engineers workflow.

The new tool allow any user to report or search EdgeHTML issues, such as problems with site rendering or standards compliance. You will see more transparent progress from Microsoft as when you’ll file bugs, you can get notified about replies from the engineering team.

Just day 2 with laptop and lost Bluetooth keyboard already! Said Driver Error. Removal failed!
Reboot was last resort and it hung 4 minutes doing that until I killed it with button!
Restart had not removed keyboard so had to try again and it finally was gone...
Then to reinstall it forces you to type a 20 digit number quickly. Good grief!

Microsoft just delayed their WIFI and Bluetooth errors until the Update we CAN'T REMOVE!

Also looking for a way to REMOVE M$ Movies & TV app as it hogs video and does not DISPLAY IT!
Just audio on two AVI files from a camera! Come on M$ another player that won't run AVI?
I still have your stupid Windows Media Player on Windows 10 too!

How to Uninstall Windows 10’s Built-in Apps (and How to Reinstall Them)
I just copied the code line and right clicked as Administrator in Windows PowerShell app. Then hit Enter.

Microsoft's focus on Windows 10 upgrades is a mistake
According to Creative Strategies' research, consumers with a PC less than a year old were much more likely to use it for tasks like social networking -- Facebook, Pinterest and the like -- playing video games, and running productivity software, than were people who had hung onto the same system for five or six years.

That makes sense: Those with older PCs haven't upgraded because they've transferred many tasks, and the time they spend on devices overall, to smartphones, tablets or a mix of the two. Likewise, new owners bought because they wanted to use their PCs for more chores.

But since Windows 10 is essentially PC-only -- Milanesi said Windows tablet sales were flat, and the state of Windows on phones was dismal -- if users aren't engaged with a personal computer, they're not engaged with Windows 10.
Yet another way Microsoft has screwed over Windows Phone users!

Now all they need to do is over upgrade the older machines so they won't work either!

Laptop's Day 4 has no WIFI or Bluetooth problems since boot. Knock on wood...

Windows XP still the third most popular OS two years after end-of-life
How many exactly? According to one bean counting firm, Netmarketshare, as of March Windows XP still holds a 10.9% share of the desktop OS market. More people are currently using XP than Apple's OS X 10.11 El Capitan (4.05%) and Windows 8.1 (9.56%). Windows 10, which saw a big jump to overtake XP in February, is marginally more popular with 14.15% of users; however, neither trouble Windows 7 and its 51.89% share of the user base.

Set update to reboot laptop at 3:30 AM as suggested in Update Settings. Never installed it.
The Action Center said that the update could not be installed. Must have been sleeping...
When else would be a better time to finish it? When I'm using it? Manually rebooted.

To make crashes 'friendlier', Microsoft adds QR codes to Windows 10 BSOD
The QR codes appeared in build 14316 of the Windows 10 Insider Preview, according to Ars Technica. Though it currently points to a generic help page, the QR code will presumably eventually direct users to specific Windows support articles.

Bash – the famous shell used in Linux – was introduced in Windows 10 last week as part of Insider Preview Build 14316, thus allowing you to run Unix commands on Windows. Today, we’ve come across a way to run entire Linux graphical applications in Windows 10 by launching them through Bash.

Day 2 on laptop with cumulative update and no problems...

Try Microsoft’s Windows 10 online emulator demo
The emulator has three overall sections which cover Windows 10 Mobile, Windows 10 for PC, and Windows 10 for Tablets.

Upon launching the website, you can click on a list containing certain categories of overall features. Then, after a second click, that list will then launch a sublist linking to videos that go into the specific details of that platform’s specific features.

Update: The site seems to be having issues at the moment. We’ve verified that it works intermittently, and so keep trying if the site doesn’t resolve for you at first.
Sounds like it may emulate Windows 10 too well...

Day 5 with laptop working well. No WIFI or Bluetooth problems so far! Taskbar still hides.
AVG Antivirus always seems to want to update and reboot immediately after Windows 10 does...
ANNOYING!

Uninstall QuickTime for Windows now!
Apple has failed to warn its customers, but Trend Micro's Zero Day Initiative issued a call to action and last night the US-CERT team confirmed: If you have QuickTime on your Windows system, uninstall it now.

Many people picked up QuickTime when it was a required component of iTunes for Windows. That's no longer the case -- iTunes now works fine without QuickTime. While opinions on iTunes vary (I can hardly mention it without hyperventilating), there's no ambiguity about QuickTime. Uninstall it now.

Microsoft's Skype now works without plug-ins with Windows 10's Edge browser

How to Trial Upgrade to Windows 10 Enterprise (Without Reinstalling Windows)
You’ll be asked to enter a new product key. If you have a legitimate Windows 10 Enterprise product key, you can enter it now. But if you don’t, grab the KMS client setup key for Windows 10 Enterprise and Windows 10 will automatically convert itself to a Windows 10 Enterprise system. Remember, as this isn’t a valid key for activation, the resulting Windows 10 system won’t activate with Microsoft’s activation servers online. You may not want to do this on your primary Windows system.

Here’s the key you’ll need to enter for Windows 10 Enterprise:
NPPR9-FWDCX-D2C8J-H872K-2YT43

The above Microsoft web page lists keys for other editions of Windows 10, so you could instead convert to Windows 10 Professional, Windows 10 Education, Windows 10 Enterprise 2015 LTSB (Long Term Servicing Branch), and other editions of Windows 10.
No word on how to revert back, perhaps try the original key...you can get it from Belarc Advisor before hand.

Don’t be surprised when Microsoft Android shows up
Let’s add all this up. Windows Phone is still dying. Android is the most popular mobile operating system by a wide margin. Microsoft has bought a company that can help its developers easily write apps for Android. And, last but not least, it has partnered with an Android vendor that wants to replace Android’s Google services and that also happens to be working on integrating Microsoft services with Android.

Maybe we won’t see Microsoft Android by 2017. But I’m certain we’ll see Cyanogenmod with Windows services locked in. For all practical purposes, it will be Microsoft’s Android.

Windows Phone? It won’t see the decade’s end, and if you blink you’ll miss the news that Microsoft is no longer supporting it. (Yes, I know the Windows Phone name has given way to Windows 10 Mobile — as if that was going to be the trick that finally got people buying Microsoft phones — but nobody cares.)

Put all the pieces together and I believe Microsoft has already decided to move lock, stock and barrel to Android. It just hasn’t come out and announced it yet.
I was hoping that Microsoft would just get Windows 10 to run Android apps...

Intro to porting Unity 3D games to UWP: Building and deploying
What you need

To develop, compile, and submit a Unity game to the Windows Store, you will need:

* Unity – Either the Unity free version or Unity Pro will work. The add-ons for publishing to the Windows Store are free for both basic and Unity Pro users.
* Visual Studio – You can use any Visual Studio SKU, including the free Visual Studio Community. To target Universal Windows Platform, you will need at least Visual Studio 2015 Update 1.
* Windows 10 – If you do not own a Windows 10 license, you can get a 90-day evaluation version. If you are running Mac OS X or will install on Apple hardware, check different options for installing using Boot Camp, VMWare, or Parallels.
* Windows Store developer account – This will be needed to submit your game to the Windows Store. During this process you will register and get verified as an individual or as a business who can submit apps and games to the store. This registration allows you to submit apps and games to PC, Phone, Tablet and also in the future to HoloLens and Xbox. There is a small registration fee for individuals to sign up, although free Dev Center accounts are often available through Microsoft-sponsored programs (e.g. for startups).
* Windows 10 test devices – While the Visual Studio simulators and emulators can replicate multi-touch and different display resolutions, it is recommended that you test on a real ARM mobile device with touch capability if you are developing a mobile/touch experience.

In this post, we will use Unity 5.3.3, Visual Studio 2015 Update 1, and Windows 10 Version 1511. For your benefit, it is recommended that you use at least Unity 5.3.2. Newer versions may have a different application programming interface.

Day 3 on laptop with no problems.

PC Internet usage is dropping
However, the company’s recent data highly suggests that desktop Internet use is declining and that it may have even peaked in 2015. ComScore’s data shows that March 2015 was the month in which users browsed the Internet most heavily over the past three years on desktop devices. During that month, US Internet users spent a total of 567 billion minutes on the web.
What did they think would happen with billions of smart phones for nebbing and chattng?

Intel axes 12,000 jobs as it looks to break away from PCs
Intel has failed for many years in its efforts to break into the mobile device market despite an aggressive approach. Its Atom chips are in a handful of smartphones, but the company is doing better in a fast-declining tablet market.

Servers are Intel most profitable unit but are also under growing threat from rival chip makers. Working with Rackspace, Google -- one of the largest server buyers in the world -- is designing a server based on IBM's Power 9 architecture and is also reportedly backing an ARM server chip from Qualcomm. Google's moves threaten Intel's dominance.

Intel is chasing the IoT market through acquisitions and by wooing hobbyists and makers. It has spent millions of dollars producing the TV show "America's Greatest Makers", which is an advertising vehicle for its development boards.
Well there goes any chance of updated PC drivers...

What Has Microsoft Done For You Lately?
Thanks to some influencial dialog with Rey Bango and Christian Heilmann I recently stopped and reflected upon Microsoft. What I realized is Microsoft isn’t just talking about change – they have actually changed. Just take a look at Github and I think you’ll see what I am talking about.
I noticed that Facebook has been posting my location when I add new posts so I looked into it:
How to stop Facebook from sharing your location

Look for your location in the Status box where you enter comments or new post links:
Image
Click the entry area and the icons appear below, with a location perhaps. Click the X to right of it to remove.
I had to manually enter the location using the Check in icon to left of where it was so it has no X to click.

Now when I click in the Status box no location comes up and I HAVE to use the Check in to set it manually:

Today the laptop seems a bit faster. AMC app ran a video series wih good sound:

Microsoft's weak phone sales drag down its Surface and cloud wins
Microsoft sold only 2.3 million Lumia phones during the quarter, 73 percent fewer units compared with the first quarter of 2015. That meant Lumia handset revenue fell 46 percent. This dragged down the company's overall device revenue despite major gains in its Surface business.

Sales of Surface tablets and the Surface Book touchscreen laptop brought in $1.1 billion for Microsoft during the last quarter, compared with $713 million during the same period last year. That's good news for the company's future, but it's being hurt by the present state of the phone business.

Day 6 with Chrome browser running slow after a short sleep.
I will be traveling so I'll reboot tomorrow morning hopefully...

Twitter app keeps closing sporadically. Chrome too slow.
Java Update just came in. Try to install...wants to install Yahoo to browser... NAH!
Oracle should stick to keeping Java from being banned!

After the install, Java setup tried to go to a verification page with Chrome. Tried Edge instead below:
Image
Edge browser failed too with no plugin for it! Apparently Oracle is still stuck on IE and Yahoo!

IE runs an application to verify and perhaps remove older versions:
Image

Verified up to date wih no older versions... Wonder what was there before?

Seems like the wake up cup of Java did the trick! Back to running normally.

Laptop worked well with the Franklin USB 3G/4G LTE stick. Recognized stick quickly. I found a new residence
with better 4 G coverage. Freedom Pop data accumulation is up to over 6G so I won't need WIFI there either.

Tried to create a batch file in Notepad. Saved the pull down from TXT to all file types and named it a BAT.
Clicked on it to run it and a command console came up behind the program, but it ran fine.
Right clicked the BAT file to edit it and Windows Explorer got busy and then FROZE! Clicking the X knocked
all of the desktop and taskbar icons off for a while until it restarted on its own. It did that EVERY TIME!

Finally I ran Notepad++ and navigated to the batch file and selected it to Open. Now WE has no problems:
Image
Because Edit with Notepad ++ is now listed as an option in the right click menu...and it does not freeze.
Doesn't Windows 10 know what batch files are opened or edited with?
No Open With... in menu list so it must need to be told when Open is clicked...

Microsoft gives OneDrive users until July to shrink their storage
The 67% reduction in free storage space will take effect July 27. On the same day, Microsoft will also eliminate the 15GB free "Camera Roll" bonus it once gave to anyone who asked. The result: Users who formerly had 30GB of free storage will have just 5GB.

Over 1 Million Android Apps Are Coming to Chrome OS … And to Windows
But ARC is also a Trojan Horse of another sort: Those Android apps won’t just run on Chrome OS and Chromebook, they’ll run on Chrome in Windows and macOS too. (And Linux, who cares?) As Ars explains, ARC can run on Windows thanks to the Native Client (NaCL), a Chrome sandboxing technology that allows Chrome apps and plugins to run at “near native” speeds, taking full advantage of the system’s CPU and GPU. Because Google ported a full Android stack to Native Client, it can run Android apps on Windows and other desktop OSes too.
Windows phones' free-fall may force Microsoft to push harder on Windows 10
The raw numbers are shocking: Microsoft sold a minuscule 2.3 million Lumia phones last quarter, down from 8.6 million a year ago. Phone revenue declines will only “steepen” during the current quarter, chief financial officer Amy Hood warned during a conference call. That’s dragged down Microsoft’s results as a company, too.

Day 5 for laptop using battery, car power unit or the normal 110 VAC power unit.

How to Make Windows Play a Sound When You Press Caps Lock, Num Lock, or Scroll Lock

In Windows 10's Settings go to Ease of Access an look for Toggle Keys settings:

You can also turn toggling sounds on with the Number Lock key for the Number key block on some PC's.

Sound emitted is higher when a function is turned On than when it is disabled.

Cortana Web searches in Windows 10 will now only be able to open Edge and Bing
Windows 10 will still let you pick a default browser that isn't Edge, and even if you use Edge or Internet Explorer, it will continue to let you pick a default search engine other than Bing. But in a change which goes into effect today, Web searches that use the Cortana-driven search box in the Windows 10 taskbar will no longer give you any choice: they will always open in Bing, and they will always use Edge to do so.

Microsoft explains that it is making this change because of the smarter capabilities that it has built in to its Cortana digital personal assistant, and the integration this requires of the browser and search engine. For example, the company says that a search for "Pizza Hut" in Cortana will, when opened up in Edge, show locations and directions and rich information. Plans are afoot to make this feature more capable and extensive; eventually you will be able to ask Cortana to "get tickets to Rihanna show," and Windows will find appropriate tickets and streamline a customer's purchase.
But Windows 8.1 Phone users can still use the old Cortana with IE and Bing...
Never did have a Chrome browser app. No doubt that IE will get rid of any Windows Phone users left...
The LEAST M$ can do is give Windows Phones the newer Edge browser!

Laptop on day 6 has scrolling problems at times and task bar likes to pop up.

After weeks of waiting for Microsoft's Calendar app to sync birthdays and no way to add Facebook:

The list of accounts was PUTRIDLY small so I looked for another app that might care.

One Calendar app adds birthdays from Facebook accounts because it WANTS USERS!

Warning! MS Calendar app is part of MS Mail so forget removing it forever...
