Disable Sync Provider Notifications in Windows 10
Starting with Windows 10 Insider Build 14901, Microsoft would be sending out new notifications within File Explorer to educate users about Windows 10’s features. Here is how the notifications would look like.

Get back Classic Sticky Notes After Installing Windows 10 Anniversary Update
If you’re not going to use the new features (Cortana integration, Ink) of the modern Sticky Notes app, you can get the classic desktop version (StickNot.exe) after upgrading to the Windows 10 anniversary update (v1607) build.

If the C:\Windows.old…Windows\System32 directory is still intact, simply copy “StikyNot.exe” to your Windows\System32 folder and create a shortcut to it on your desktop. The program still works in Windows 10 version 1607.
Revoke Microsoft Account Info Access Permissions for Apps and Services
Over time, you may have given permissions for a number of third-party applications or services to access your Microsoft account information. If you no longer use some of those apps or services, here is how to revoke Microsoft account info access rights for those apps.

How to Disable Cortana in Windows 10’s Anniversary Update with Regedit
Open the Registry Editor by pressing Windows+R on your keyboard, typing “regedit” into the box, and pressing Enter. Navigate to the following key in the left sidebar:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\Windows Search

If you don’t see a “Windows Search” key (folder) below the Windows folder, right-click the Windows folder and select New > Key. Name it “Windows Search”.

Right-click the “Windows Search” key (folder) in the left pane and select New > DWORD (32-bit) Value. Name the value “AllowCortana”. Double-click it and set the value to “0”.

To undo your change and restore Cortana in the future, you can just return here, locate the “AllowCortana” value, and set it to “1”.

You can now close the registry editor. You’ll have to sign out and sign back in or restart your computer before the change takes effect.
How to Use Your Free Windows 10 License After Changing Your PC’s Hardware
The free Windows 10 license you receive is tied to your PC’s hardware. You’re still allowed to use Windows 10 on that same PC even after changing its hardware. Activating that license is easier than ever in Windows 10’s Anniversary Update.
You Can Still Get Windows 10 for Free from Microsoft’s Accessibility Site
The free upgrade offer is simple. To get Windows 10, you’ll just have to visit the “Windows 10 free upgrade for customers who use assistive technologies” page and download the upgrade tool. Like the previous free upgrade offer, this only works if your computer is currently running Windows 7 or Windows 8.1. (If you’re using Windows 8, you can get a free upgrade to Windows 8.1 and then upgrade to Windows 10.)

Still no Anniversary Upgrade for Windows 10 on 32 or 64 bit PC!

This makes me wonder how BAD it will really be for my XP Inspiron laptop...

Microsoft acknowledges Anniversary Update causes freezing
Microsoft says a fix is in the works, offers temporary workaround that isn't very feasible

After a lot of anecdotal reports, Microsoft acknowledged there is a problem with the Anniversary Update to Windows 10 causing PCs to freeze up. However, it says the problem is isolated to a specific PC configuration.

In a Windows forum post, Microsoft claims the freezing issue is experienced only on computers with SSDs where apps are installed on a different drive than the one where Windows 10 is installed. The obvious workaround is to move all apps to the drive where Windows 10 is located, and the company actually recommends this.

“Microsoft has received a small number of reports of Windows 10 freezing after installing the Anniversary Update on systems with the operating system stored on a solid-state drive (SSD) and apps and data stored on a separate drive. This issue does not occur when starting Windows 10 in Safe Mode,” forum moderator Basith M wrote.

It’s better to simply uninstall the Anniversary Update than a dozen apps and wait for a fix.
How to Stop automatic driver updates on Windows 10

Right click Start button and select System link and Advanced System Settings Hardware tab :

In Device installation Settings make sure to set it to not download drivers for older PC's automatically
(not recommended of course)

After recent updates without Anniversary Upgrade, Chrome is slower and Extensions crash on startup.

Microsoft starts rolling out Windows 10 Mobile Anniversary Update for phones
Those with unlocked Windows Phones that support Windows 10 Mobile will be able to get the RTM version, Build 14393.67, starting today. (Those in the Windows Insider program on the Fast Ring already have Build 14393.67.) Carriers are in charge of when they'll release the update to those without unlocked devices.

Those include: Lumia Icon, 1520, 930, 640, 640XL, 730, 735, 830, 532, 535, 540, 635 1GB, 636 1GB, 638 1GB, 430, 435, BLU Win HD w510u, BLU Win HD LTE x150q, MCJ Madosma Q501 -- plus any newer phones like the Lumia 950 and 950XL which originally shipped with Windows 10 Mobile.

Microsoft Rewards is how Microsoft will pay you to use Edge, Bing and more
At the end of July, Google Chrome held over 50 percent of the world’s browser market share; Edge is at 5.09 percent, according to NetApplications. Microsoft clearly wants to lift that number. Locking down Cortana to use only Bing might be seen as the stick, but a rewards program like Microsoft Rewards is the carrot.
Webcam Issues in Windows 10 Anniversary Update
This problem was first perceived as a bug in the Anniversary Update, but it appears to be an intentional change in the Redstone 1 update. Microsoft seems to have dropped support for MJPEG or H264 encoding standards and moved towards YUY2 for performance. Webcams that use MJPEG or H264 would not work correctly after the Anniversary Update. Not sure if Microsoft is going to bring back support for those standards based on user feedback.

Bungling Microsoft singlehandedly proves that golden backdoor keys are a terrible idea
Microsoft leaked the golden keys that unlock Windows-powered tablets, phones and other devices sealed by Secure Boot – and is now scrambling to undo the blunder.

These skeleton keys can be used to install non-Redmond operating systems on locked-down computers. In other words, on devices that do not allow you to disable Secure Boot even if you have administrator rights – such as ARM-based Windows RT tablets – it is now possible to sidestep this block and run, say, GNU/Linux or Android.

What's more, it is believed it will be impossible for Microsoft to fully revoke the leaked keys.

And perhaps most importantly: it is a reminder that demands by politicians and crimefighters for special keys, which can be used by investigators to unlock devices in criminal cases, will inevitably jeopardize the security of everyone.

Microsoft's misstep was uncovered by two researchers, MY123 and Slipstream, who documented their findings here in a demoscene-themed writeup published on Tuesday. Slip believes Microsoft will find it impossible to undo its leak.

After 3 weeks of waiting, decided to find my Anniversary Upgrade on the W7-10 64 bit desktop:
Image

I clicked the Learn more link and got the following page:

Image
Will the 1511 Updates stop? What if you cannot use 1607?
Note there have been 2 updates since 1607...another coming next week

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/hel ... ing_client

Clicking the large link box downloaded the Windows10Upgrade28084. Then this screen verified compatibility:
Image
Took 10 minutes to download and verify download.
10 minutes more to update to 75%, 15 minutes more to ask for a Restart. Restart countdown is 25 minutes.
Reboot with update at 0% to 30% 30 minutes later.
Reboot with update from 30% to 75% 13 minutes later.
Reboot with update from 75% to 100% 22 minutes later.
Lock screen with password entry box when clicked about 1 hour and 40 minutes total.

Message saying Hi. Message We updated your PC.
"Getting things ready"...with short wait
"These updates help protect you in an online world"
"Go to Start> Get Started App"
"Making sure your apps are good to go"
"Thanks for updating to Windows 10" box with Exit button
"One Drive needs updated" with permission box popup. One Drive Folder opens.

Get Started App:

Windows 10's Quick Assist lets you fix Dad's computer from your desk

There is also the new Windows 10 Upgrade Assistant in the new Start Menu:
Image
Note that the new Start Menu has the File Explorer, Settings star and Power selections in a vertical side menu now.

It’s important to note that Quick Assist requires two people to initiate the connection; you won’t be able to remotely tweak your aunt’s PC while she’s out jogging. If you choose to give assistance, you’re first asked to log in with your Microsoft account. You’re then provided with a six-digit security PIN code that you must provide to the person you’re assisting within 10 minutes. (Both parties must enter the same code.) Again, Microsoft bends over backwards to help you, offering to email the PIN to your friend or family member, or save it to your clipboard to paste into a chat app.
Windows Update Settings include Windows Defender which now allows Limited Periodic Scanning.
Image
That also allows a PC to have Anti-Virus software with periodic WD protection also.
Recovery allows you to Reset this PC, Go back to an earlier build, Advanced Startup
For developers allows developers to set device discovery, view file extensions, or execute PowerShell scripts.

Defender started scanning and asked to Turn on Protection Updates which I did
Image

After the scan I got this unintelligible result. What am I supposed to do? Get rid of my Anti-Virus?
Image
Remember that M$ turned it off long ago and now it wants periodic scans with this result?

What Microsoft won't tell you about your Windows 10 recovery drive size
To do that just type Recovery Drive into the Windows search bar and select Create a Recovery Drive from the options. It’ll examine your system and tell you how much space you’ll need before it does anything.
Windows 10 update breaks PowerShell and Microsoft won't fix it until next week
The latest came on Tuesday, when Microsoft rolled-out a cumulative patch for the Anniversary Update that broke PowerShell, its command line shell and scripting language. The notes accompanying the release suggest Microsoft knew the changes would stop several PowerShell features from working.

It's the most recent issue to emerge following the rollout of the Windows 10 Anniversary Update, which has triggered mystery freezing issues and broken USB-connected webcams.

Those two issues remain unresolved in Tuesday's update -- KB3176934 (OS Build 14393.82) --for Windows 10 version 1607, also known as the Anniversary Update.

Microsoft doesn't expect to remedy the PowerShell issues until it releases another update scheduled for August 30
Apparently the KB3176934 update came with the Anniversary Upgrade I did yesterday...
Image
This is all of the updates listed!

Reliability monitor was apparently ERASED with the Anniversary Upgrade:

In addition to the features lists above, there are many, MANY other features of Azure App Service Web Apps that you get to take advantage of. Many of these features are not offered by traditional free or shared hosting providers.

After two days of Chrome running slow and having to reboot, decided to upgrade laptop.
Anniversary upgrade went about same as 64 bit desktop.

32 bit Laptop has problems running Chrome. No sites a all!

After Upgrade Windows Update had no update hisory...
Image

Checking for updates found these. Do not know when 64 bit desktop got them.
Image

What happened to the 3:30 AM setting?
Image
The Network setting for limited WIFI has been buried now too!

Guess what browser popped up when I clicked Chrome in taskbar? IE
Image
I am now using it to post this...Chrome STILL does not connect to anything!
Note the right tab ready to grab Chrome again...

A new Chrome install did not help. Cannot UNINSTALL Chrome either!
Image
Had to reboot to unistall (offered to remove all data -said no) and do a clean Chrome install, but it did not help

I was able to RECOVER it back to the previous Windows 10 in 10 minutes

Browser wars? Do they realize all of my personal data is on Chrome?

How to set a Metered WIFI connection in Anniversary Upgrade:

In Settings, go to Network and Internet, WIFI and click on shown network name to set PC discovery or Metered Connection.
Image

Or click your providers WIFI name and Properties to Make this PC discoverable or Set as a metered connection:
Image

To choose how Updates are delivered, go to Update Settings then Advanced settings:
Image

This option allows your Network and PC's to help download updates to your PC's and others:
Image

What Is the $WINDOWS.~BT Folder, and Can You Delete It?
Warning: If you choose to delete the $WINDOWS.~BT folder on Windows 10, you won’t be able to downgrade to the previous build of Windows 10 or previous version of Windows your PC had installed. The option to roll your PC back at Settings > Update & Security > Recovery will vanish.

Windows should automatically delete these files to free up space after ten days in the Anniversary Update, or thirty days if your PC hasn’t upgraded to the Anniversary Update yet.
My 32 bit laptop now has both a $Windows.~BT (512 MB) and $Windows.~WS (377 KB) folder:
Image
My 64 bit desktop has the $Windows.~BT folder weighing in at 1.1G.

I guess that means you only have 10 days to go back...

W10 Laptop was slow running Chrome 2 days, picked up speed and lasted 5.

Everything else seems to work fine...now do I ever get updates again with Version 1511? YES!
Image
At bottom PostImage app sends out a notification bar to click the window to copy.

UTOH! What is this?

Microsoft re-enables KB3035583 and KB3150513 on Windows 7 force upgrade to Windows 10
It seems that KB3150513 makes modifications to AppRaiser, the Get Windows 10 app feature that checks for compatibilities on a Windows computer before the upgrade to Windows 10. Users in this way can figure out what apps are completely compatible with Windows 10 and which are going to be removed once the setup begins, allowing them to decide whether to start the upgrade instantly or defer it until compatibility issues are resolved.
This may be their way to FORCE the Anniversary Upgrade!
Imagine my GLEE when it uninstalls Chrome because it no longer works...

Ran WUShowHide for Windows 10 and KB3150513 came up while still waiting to install:
Image

If you already installed KB3150513, here are instructions to get rid of it. Paste the commands below into Notepad, save the file as a .BAT file and run it from an elevated Administrator command prompt:
wusa /uninstall /kb:3150513 /quiet /norestart
wusa /uninstall /kb:2977759 /quiet /norestart
wusa /uninstall /kb:2952664 /quiet /norestart
wusa /uninstall /kb:2976978 /quiet /norestart
No let-up in devastating decline of Microsoft's browsers
The brutal erosion of Microsoft's browser share has been unprecedented, rivaled only by the plunge of Netscape Navigator, which Internet Explorer dethroned in the second half of the 1990s. In the past six months, IE has lost more than 12 percentage points of user share; since the first of the year, IE has shed 16 points.

Chrome has passed IE as the most-used browser largely because Microsoft ended support for all but the newest browsers -- IE11 and Edge -- in January. The mandate, which dropped support for some versions of IE years earlier than expected, gave users a choice of upgrading to a newer edition of Internet Explorer (or upgrading to Windows 10 and adopting Edge) or dumping IE for a rival. Millions did the latter, switching to Chrome.
How to Backup and Restore Device Drivers in Windows 10?
Open Command Prompt (Admin), and type or copy and paste the following command:

dism /online /export-driver /destination:d:\drivers-backup

This backs up the complete set of 3rd party driver packages in the current Windows installation, to the Drivers-Backup folder in the D:\ backup drive. Refer to the drive and folder when restoring hardware drivers.
See the above article link to restore drivers.

Will wait until I have a problem to remove it...MAY have one already

Execution Service has stopped many times yesterday and...

today. Plus two apps quit working creating a drop in reliability:

Also Logitech Unifying receiver, device, mouse and keyboard installed all at same time 8 times!

I did start using a K800 keyboard today instead of Bluetooth one that is having key press problems.

Investigating how to fix Chrome browser in Anniversary Upgrade
in my pc I try this steps & its solved for me.

this steps for how to enable safe mode in windows 10
1. in windows 10 go to control panal
2. go to administrative tool
3. open 'System Configuration'
4. go to 'boot' & select 'safe boot'
5. click 'ok' & restart computer

Now windows 10 load in safe mode.

after login open chrome, its work now.
then,
1. in windows 10 go to control panal
2. go to administrative tool
3. open 'System Configuration'
4. go to 'boot' & un-select 'safe boot'
5. click 'ok' & restart computer

now windows 10 load normal.
After this its solved for me.
Create a new Chrome browser user profile (blame it on Chrome)
Exit Google Chrome completely.
Enter the keyboard shortcut Windows key +E to open Windows Explorer.
In the Windows Explorer window that appears enter the following in the address bar.
Windows XP: %USERPROFILE%\Local Settings\Application Data\Google\Chrome\User Data\
Windows Vista/ Windows 7/ Windows 8/ Windows 10: %LOCALAPPDATA%\Google\Chrome\User Data\
Locate the folder called "Default" in the directory window that opens and rename it as "Backup default."
Try opening Google Chrome again. A new "Default" folder is automatically created as you start using the browser.

If you wish, you can transfer information from your old user profile to your new one. However, this action is not recommended, since a part of your old profile may be corrupt. With that in mind, to transfer your old bookmarks, copy the "Bookmarks.bak" file from the "Backup default" folder to your new "Default" folder. Once moved, rename the file from "Bookmarks.bak" to "Bookmarks" to complete the migration. All other browser data will remain in the "Backup default" folder, but you won't be able to transfer it to your new profile.
Naturally M$ wants you to lose all your links and data
Now you may as well start all over with Edge...

Microsoft fixes Anniversary Update's login freeze in Windows 10
Windows 10 users had many good reasons to install the Anniversary Update at the beginning of August, even if most changes were incremental. Less loved were the handful of serious bugs that came with it, from breaking webcams to systemwide crashes when users plugged in e-readers. But its worst offense was freezing when users logged in on devices that put their operating system on one logical drive and app data on another. Split users, your ship has come in: Microsoft patched the error in an auto-update on August 31st.

But as for the other bugs, prepare to wait: The only fix on the way is a partial one for the webcam freeze, which should arrive sometime in September.

Windows Update offers Logitech download. Still getting Execution Service errors
Have not found anything even mentioning that service on Google...

Not listed in Task Manager Services by that name either!

Logitech - Other hardware - USB Input Device (Logitech Download Assistant).

The Logitech Update is listed as installed, but it is not in list to Uninstall:

Still no updates for 1511...

Using the Blue Screen Error (BSOD) Troubleshooter in Windows 10 Anniversary
Blue Screen Troubleshooter is yet another addition in Windows 10 Anniversary Update. This Troubleshooter pack finds the root cause of Blue Screen errors (commonly known as “BSOD”) you may be experiencing in your computer, and helps you fix them.

Running the Blue Screen Troubleshooter

Open Control Panel, change the view setting to icons.

Click Troubleshooting, and click “View all” in the tasks pane.

Click “Blue Screen”. This opens the Blue Screen Troubleshooter.
There is also a Blue Screen View application available on web for older versions.

Prevent Window Update from Restarting Your System During Work Time
Windows 10 Anniversary Update includes a setting where you can configure your device usage hours (“Active Hours”) so that Windows Update wouldn’t restart the system during your regular working hours. Here is how to set the Active Hours, and another optional setting “Custom Restart Time”.

Setting Active Hours and Custom Restart Time

Open Settings (WinKey + i), click “Update and Security”, and click “Change active hours”.

How to repair Windows' master boot record and fix your bricked PC
A nasty new form of ransomware is wreaking havoc on computers. Hackers that encrypt your files and demand money from you in the form of bitcoin is bad enough, but a few versions also overwrite your Windows PC’s master boot record (MBR).

The master boot record is a key part of your PC’s startup system. It contains information about the computer’s disk partitions and helps load the operating system. Without a properly functioning MBR, your PC simply won’t work.
Create a Windows 10 Recovery Drive

Type Create into the Cortana Ask me anything search bar and it should list Create Recovery Drive.
After running Recovery Drive option, keep box checked to backup Windows system files and click Next
The application will tell you how big of a USB drive you will need. My laptop only needs 4G

Today battery charge indicator went flashing red for first time ever.
Unplugged charger cord and laptop died. Replaced battery with original.
Replacement battery of 6 months says it is still good with 5 green indicator lights.

Security Update for Windows 10 Version 1511 (KB3185614) never installed on 9-20.
Installed today waiting in Windows Update without a reboot necessary.

A site I was on last night had a Popup come up saying my PC was blocked and listed
a phone number to call with a warning not to close the popup window. Came back
up anyhow. Rebooted and opened Chrome browser with new tabs, not previous ones...

Execution Service is still closing at least a few times per day:

I've decided to try to remove the KB3150513 Update
Apparently reinstalled yesterday even though listed already! Removed w/o reboot.

Windows 10, 64 bit has same Execution Service problem up to 20 times:

MIDI Enhancements in Windows 10
Several new things Microsoft created to make MIDI even more useful in your apps:

UWP MIDI Basics – using MIDI in Windows Store apps
New Bluetooth LE MIDI support in Windows 10 Anniversary Update
The Win32 wrapper for UWP MIDI (making the API accessible to desktop apps)
MIDI Helper libraries for C# and PowerShell

More than half of PCs don't have Windows 10 AU yet
Just 34.5 percent of all PCs are running Windows 10 version 1607, aka the Windows 10 Anniversary Update, according to AdDuplex, maker of a Windows 10 SDK for third-party app makers. The majority, 59.9 percent, are still running Windows 10 version 1511, also known as the Fall Update.

On August 2, Microsoft said the Anniversary Update would be rolled out “in phases,” with newer machines receiving the update first. That presumably meant that Microsoft was providing the update to those PCs that would likely have the fewest issues updating. What’s surprising is how slowly Microsoft is pushing out the AU to older PCs. But there are two likely culprits: Microsoft, and businesses, who want to ensure the update doesn’t break their own apps.
Maybe they know it will not work on older PC's?
Why this matters: The conservative approach may simply be an attempt to minimize problems that have already plagued users, such as an issue where PCs running the Windows 10 AU froze when their data was split between an SSD and a conventional hard drive. With Microsoft now giving you just 10 days to roll back to the previous build, some columnists warned enterprises to avoid it altogether. Still, platform fragmentation is already a concern for Microsoft, with its user base split between Windows XP, Windows 7, 8, and 10. A slow rollout divides its resources further.
24-bit Color in the Windows Console!
But rather than just add a few more colors, or limit our console to a mere 256 colors, we’ve updated the Windows Console to support full, glorious 24-bit RGB true color!

This is actually a little tricky to demo since most Windows apps only support 16 colors at most whereas the Linux world has broadly supported 256 color terminals for a while now, and 24-bit color is becoming more established.

Thanks to our ability to run Linux apps and scripts using our new Bash on Ubuntu on Windows environment atop the Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL), we can use some Linux scripts and tools to demonstrate the Console’s new 24-bit color support:

Laptop runs slow and I cannot get to Start Menu with mouse clicks.
Scrolling is very slow with mouse stopping too. Have to reboot with power button once again!

KB3150513 Update was back in Windows Update again!
Allowed it to install without a reboot since laptop ran so bad...

13 common Windows 10 problems – and how to quickly fix them
WINDOWS 10 ANNIVERSARY UPDATE MESSED UP MY PC!
Yeah, we know. Ever since the Anniversary Update started rolling out, users have been reporting that their machines are hanging upon restart, and some are completely locking out mouse and keyboard input. All that before the freezing issue was officially documented.

As well as the freeze-specific solutions below, there are a few additional workarounds that seem to have been working for people, according to this Reddit thread – including disabling Secure Boot – but that's not appropriate (or effective) for everyone.
Problem is that mouse and scrolling are even bad in Version 1511!

Stop Windows Store Apps from Updating Automatically in Windows 10
Sometimes you’d like to disable automatic updating to save bandwidth and traffic especially when you’re on
a slow or data limited connection.
Disable Automatic Updating of Store apps

Open Windows Store, click your user account icon at the top and click Settings.
Disable “Update apps automatically”

Updating Windows Store apps manually

To update Windows Store apps manually when needed, open Windows Store, click your user account icon and click “Downloads and updates”.

This lists the recent Windows Store activity (installation & updates) for your user account. Click “Check for updates” button which shows the list of available updates at the top.

You can either click “Update all” to update all apps listed there, or select a particular app in the list, and click Update.

PSA: Windows 10's Anniversary Update reactivates ads you've already disabled
It’s no secret that Windows 10’s stuffed with revenue-generating hooks for Microsoft, but I find the idea of a paid-for operating system shoving straight-up ads in my face distasteful, and disabled the Get Office ads and every other ad-related setting months ago. After a bit of poking and prodding, I discovered that beyond reinstalling the Get Office app that surfaces those notifications, the Anniversary Update also re-enabled Start menu and lock screen ads, essentially tossing my explicit choice to disable them out the window. And it did so without consent or even a notice that these changes were happening in the background.
How to remove those Windows 10 ads again!
