Laptop startup lost all my stuff!
Windows 10 says something about a temporary account and something about updating...
Picture folder and most others were empty. Start page had only a few Microsoft App tiles.
App list had some of my apps like Printkey so I took a picture which was put in the Temp folder
Desktop had 4 icons left, task bar had 3 apps left, background picture was the Win 10 window.

Rebooted and everything was back to normal.
The pictures I took were gone now so nothing to show. Maybe the laptop was hot from trunk of car...

This indicates to me how much your Microsoft Account could affect your files!

Windows 10 KB3163018 (10586.420) and KB3149135 Updates Now Available

No word on any problems with this update so far...

On June 14th the Restart was scheduled for 2:20 AM and I selected that time by selecting the button:
Image
Today it has unselected the button and made a new time most likely because the laptop no longer hibernates.
This will most likely continue until I restart manually,,,

I took the above snapshot with the Snip app which then tried to save it in System32.
But then a warning box comes up saying it cannot be saved there and offers the Pictures folder instead.
This happens often after a boot or reboot...which I will perform after I see if the Update has problems.

How to fix Windows 10 KB3163018 & KB3163017 fails to install

After Update install got warning about my Antivirus and Windows Defender being turned off. Had to verify through prompts...notification was in Action Center if balloon click is missed.

Another big investment mistake by M$! Just like Nokia Phones which they have effectively destroyed:

LinkedIn needed to sell HIGH to pay off most of their employees paid by their stock! The Code Project
Otherwise if the stock price falls, there would be a mass exodus from the company by valued employees!

I never chose to join LinkedIn, but they have sent me warnings to reset my passwords...

This was only on DAY 5 of the latest update! Apparently 2 other problems happened before the reboot:

Since the restart, scrolling has become more difficult in Chrome browser. Stops and sits there...
A PDF file opened in Edge had no problems scrolling while the same file opened in Chrome did.

Microsoft announced a new Refresh application for people getting preview editions. Win 10 only!
It is really nothing more than a new Reset where you can keep your files or not.
Refresh will sill remove MOST of your programs and post a list of them on the desktop...

Microsoft wages war on 'crapware' with new Windows 10 REFRESH tool
According to the forum message -- which was penned by a Microsoft employee identified only as "Jason" -- Refresh Windows downloads and installs a recent, pristine build of Windows 10 on the PC, overwriting the pre-installed version.

More importantly, all non-Microsoft applications that were bundled or already installed on Windows 10 -- the exception include the Mail email client and the Edge browser -- are eliminated during the refresh. "It will also remove most pre-installed applications such as OEM applications, support applications, and drivers," wrote Jason. The term "OEM" (original equipment manufacturers) refers to computer makers such as Dell, Hewlett-Packard and Lenovo.

For that reason, Refresh Windows would be best used immediately after purchasing a new Windows 10 system, and before the buyer installed any software on the machine.

As of Friday, Refresh Windows worked only on Insider build 14342 or later. Microsoft issued build 14342 on May 26, but has followed with several since then, most recently on Thursday with build 14677. Assuming Microsoft follows through, the tool will work with the production code set to ship in July.
When will there ever be an option to FIX Windows and not have to spend hours restoring programs?
All Windows has to do is FIX its own files and let us fix anything else if programs quit working after that!

Get more out of your battery with Microsoft Edge
To understand the impact, we compared today’s leading browsers across three independent dimensions. First, we measured their power consumption in a controlled lab environment. Second, we examined the real-world energy telemetry from millions of Windows 10 devices. Finally, we recorded time-lapse videos of each browser performing the same tasks until the battery dies. Microsoft Edge wins out in every case, which translates to longer battery life for you.
Today I got an email ad from M$ for a Lenovo Yoga 900 with this notice at the bottom:

Here’s what happens after the July 29th free Windows 10 offer ends
In other words, those who do not jump on the free upgrade offer to Windows 10 and are still running Windows 7 or Windows 8.1, you will have to purchase a license from the Microsoft Store or from any other retailer who carries the operating system. Windows 10 Home runs for $119.99 (plus tax) and Windows 10 Pro runs for $199.99 (plus tax).

Microsoft also offers a “Windows 10 Pro Pack” which allows a consumer to upgrade from Windows 10 Home to Windows 10 Pro, and it runs for $99 (plus tax).

Day 8 on second run of laptop. Very slow at first wakeup. Takes a while to wake up, 3 to 5 minutes.

Needs a reboot anyhow! Noticed that Chrome no longer takes time to refresh tabs when clicked on.
Gmail used to refresh with new emails added. Now I have to click Refresh myself for newer ones.

Start button sill takes up to 20 seconds to actually come up. Same with Action Center.

Woman wins $10,000 judgment against Microsoft for forced Windows 10 upgrade
The Seattle Times reports that Teri Goldstein, of Sausalito, California, sued Microsoft after a failed Windows 10 upgrade left her system performing poorly, prone to crashing, and reportedly unusable for multiple days. Given the general issues associated with performing in-place upgrades, even successful ones, it’s not surprising that some users would run into problems. Goldstein reached out to Microsoft customer service to attempt to resolve her issues, but filed suit against the company once it failed to resolve her problems. Her $10,000 figure reflected estimated lost compensation as well as the cost of a new system.

Microsoft says Windows 10 Anniversary Update is coming August 2nd
THE ANNIVERSARY UPDATE WILL BE FREE (IF YOU'VE ALREADY INSTALLED WINDOWS 10)

As its name suggests, this update arrives very nearly on the anniversary of Windows 10's release, which began July 29th last year. In the time since, Microsoft has pushed Windows 10 onto over 300 million machines (albeit, in a sometimes aggressive manner that not everyone appreciated). That's been helped in large part because the update, for people with Windows 7 and 8, has been free — however, that'll change just before the Anniversary Update arrives.

The Anniversary Update will be free to everyone with Windows 10, though people updating from older versions of Windows are expected to have to pay $119 for a full install. That's likely to significantly slow down adoption. It also means, if you've been putting off the update but planned to get around to it eventually, now's about the time to click install.
IE: Get Windows 10 before July 30th or pay for the upgrade!

M$ tweaks aggressive Windows 10 upgrade prompt following complaints
Microsoft has clearly learned that its ambition to have one billion machines running Windows 10 isn't worth losing the trust of its customers over. The new prompt includes the ability to "decline free offer," and the "Red X" at the top corner of the dialogue box will no longer initiate the upgrade. Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 users have around a month left until Microsoft's free Windows 10 upgrade offer comes to an end. Microsoft is expected to charge $119 for an upgrade to Windows 10 from July 30th.
That $10,000 lawsuit loss may have helped!

Now I wonder what the Anniversary Update will do to my laptop's XP drivers?...

Had to reinstall 7-ZIP on my laptop today as it was gone from R-click RAR file menu...

What to expect from the Windows 10 Anniversary Update
A bigger change is the way that Windows 10 version 1607 handles those monthly cumulative updates. This release still offers no way to defer those updates automatically (short of using Windows Update for Business Group Policy settings), but you can at least define an Active Hours period of up to 12 hours per day during which you normally use the PC.

That's not to say the Start experience hasn't been tweaked for this release, however. The new design incorporates a scrolling All Apps list that is permanently available, while the power button and shortcuts to frequently used folders shrink to a slim column of icons on the left.

Since the release of Windows 8 nearly four years ago, Microsoft has been methodically moving user controls from the old Control Panel to the new Settings app. With version 1607, that work takes a major step forward. Several major groups of options, including networking, have now moved almost entirely to the new Settings app, and the new iconography, replacing the generic gear icons used in previous versions, adds to the sense that this version of Settings is a major update.

I originally thought of Cortana as a novelty, but with the changes in version 1607 I find myself calling on her services more often, as a calculator, a translator, a bringer of sports scores and search results, and a package tracker. This is definitely not Siri, but it's also not exactly Google Now. Microsoft has created something unique with Cortana.

The new default browser for Windows 10, Microsoft Edge, arrived late in the original preview cycle, and it has been playing catch-up ever since. The big news for version 1607, of course, is the arrival, at long last, of extensions. After a rocky start, the limited selection of preview releases seems to be working well. The LastPass password manager, which was the number-one request from many of my correspondents, does its job as expected, and the two Adblock extensions have the same strengths and weaknesses as on other platforms.

Microsoft has been delivering support for digital pens and the ink datatype since the dawn of the Tablet PC in 2002. Those designs never took off. Version 1607 tries to reboot that feature with the introduction of the Windows Ink platform.

The good news, based on my testing on multiple hardware platforms, is that this appears to be a solid, stable release.

The top features Windows 10 users want in the Anniversary Update

10 reasons to reject Microsoft's free Windows 10 upgrade

Confirmed: Only Microsoft Edge will play Netflix content at 1080p on a PC
On Wednesday, Microsoft claimed that its Edge browser was the only one of the big four browsers—which also includes Chrome, Firefox, and Opera—to offer 1080p resolution while playing Netflix content. A quick test of all four browsers by PCWorld proved this claim to be true, with the other three browsers capped at 720p.
I would assume that my laptop could not with older XP video drivers...

Microsoft will bet you a new laptop that it can upgrade your compatible PC to Windows 10
The bet is that if you bring your old PC to an Answer Desk at a Microsoft Store, they will take care of the upgrade process for your for free, and have your computer ready by the end of the day. If your computer isn’t ready by the end of the day, then you get a free Dell Inspiron 15.

Terms Apply
There are a few conditions. Your old PC must be capable of running Windows 10, meaning it meets the minimum system requirements. Also, you have to check into the Answer Desk by noon local time for the bet to be valid. The offer is currently active and runs through July 29th, or while supplies last. The deal is only available in the US (including Puerto Rico) and Canada.
Just Windows 7 , 8 or 8.1 computers are eligible for the upgrade, not XP!
There are also a few additional offers. If your PC isn’t compatible, you can recycle it for a $150 credit towards a new PC. And you also get $20 off Office 365 Home when you upgrade to Windows 10. Finally, Microsoft’s announcement mentions there is a chance to win an Xbox One when upgrading in store, but you have to ask a store associate.

Microsoft says it won't hit Windows 10 installation goal on time
Microsoft’s lofty goal to hit one billion Windows 10 installations just three years after its debut was apparently a bit too optimistic.

When probed on the matter by ZDNet’s Mary Jo Foley, a spokesperson for the Redmond-based company noted that they are pleased with their progress but due to “the focusing of” its phone hardware business, it will take longer than originally anticipated to reach the one billion monthly active devices goal.

If you recall, Microsoft’s Terry Myerson set the mark at Build 2015 just ahead of Windows 10’s summer launch. The one billion installation figure was to include all devices running Windows 10 including desktop PCs, tablets, notebooks, Windows Phones, Xbox One consoles, HoloLens headsets, Surface Hub conferencing systems and IoT devices.
Windows 10’s “Network Reset” Fixes Internet Connectivity Issues (New Feature)
Windows 10 Anniversary Update Insider Preview builds include a new feature named Network Reset that quickly resets your network settings to defaults, for all network adapters in the system. This can be very useful to revert back to the default settings if you face any connectivity issues especially after malware attack.

Network Reset primarily resets your network adapters, resets the winsock settings and perhaps does more than just that.

In earlier builds the user needs to run these commands manually to clear network adapter configuration and reset winsock.

netcfg -d

netsh winsock reset

Windows 10’s Network Reset does this all for you.

Amazon sends email notification cancelling Windows Phone App!
Hello,

We're contacting you because our records indicate that you have previously installed the Amazon App for Windows Phone from the Microsoft App Store. We will be retiring the app you currently have on your device, meaning its contents will no longer be updated. You will still have access to the app until August 15th, 2016. We encourage you to visit Amazon.com on your mobile browser where you will have access to our newest shopping features and customer experience.

We look forward to seeing you again soon.

The company is also criticized for its lack of sufficient security -- such as the four-digit PIN used to protect payment information which does not have a limit on the number of guesses that can be made. 10 compelling reasons to upgrade to Windows 10

2 ways to control Windows 10 automatic updates
If you have a Professional, Enterprise, or Education edition of Windows 10, you can turn off automatic updates. But the option is hidden (see above link).

If you’ve got the plain old Home version of Windows 10, you can stop automatic updates by lying to your operating system. (Morally speaking, this doesn’t bother me a bit.)

But there’s a more serious caveat. It only works with a Wi-Fi network. Ethernet need not apply.

The trick is to tell Windows that you have a metered connection to the Internet—one that can only download so many bits per month without increasing your ISP bill. To tell Windows that you have a metered connection (whether you do or not):

Select Start > Settings > Network & Internet.
The Wi-Fi tab should already be selected in the left pane. In the right, main pane, select Advanced options.
Turn on Metered connection.

Regedit Find fix that finally worked for me (#26):
This has been suggested as a solution by someone else on answers dot microsoft dot com:

I can duplicate a crash while searching the registry with regedit.exe. The problem area seems to be HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\Setup\Upgrade. This behavior started after the upgrade to 10586.
I see this behavior on four different desktops after the upgrade.

If I search the registry the search will continue normally up until HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\Setup\Upgrade and then hang. Cancelling the search results in the "registry editor has stopped working" message. If I start a search after that key the search will complete without hanging.

I deleted the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\Setup\Upgrade (=0) key and experience no problem with searching..

Can anyone else reproduce this error? I've cleaned up the leftover previous Windows installation and temporary installation files after the 10586 upgrade and I don't see any problems after deleting the key. Just want to make sure there are no unintended consequences waiting to byte me.
Thanks.
GM
Just searching for HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\Setup\Upgrade Key froze the Find...had to find it manually

After removing the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\Setup\Upgrade Key, I searched for CurrentControlSet
Image
I searched for that key many times pressing F3 to Find Next before it finally reached the end of the registry file.
It displays the Finished Searching box now when reaching the end of file after CurrentControlSet on my PC.

Let me know if this does NOT work for you!

My desktop Win 10 PC Regedit appears to work correctly SOMETIMES with the following HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\Setup\Upgrade settings:
Image
It did NOT WORK and actually restarted several times before I could Find CurrentControlSet to the end of file...

Desktop PC had to be restarted THREE TIMES to keep the screen running! Got No signal
AVG had to be reinstalled as it said the version was not compatible with the 64 bit machine...
Greenshot desktop picture app no longer works at all with PrntScn key!

Laptop mouse quits working causing me to have to reboot on day 5.

You can't turn off Cortana in the Windows 10 Anniversary Update
Cortana, the personal digital assistant that replaced Windows 10’s search function and taps into Bing’s servers to answer your queries with contextual awareness, no longer has an off switch.

But what if you still don’t want to use Cortana at all?

Refusing to download the Anniversary Update is not an option. You can delay it, but since Windows 10 updates are mandatory for home users, you’ll eventually receive the update.

"Cortana works best when you sign in, but if you choose not to, you can still use her to chat, search the web and your Windows device," Microsoft told PCWorld. "If you like, you can also easily hide Cortana and the search box in the taskbar altogether."
Microsoft faces new lawsuits over aggressive Windows 10 free upgrade push
Both of these lawsuits are seeking class action status, which - if awarded - would open up the company to considerably wider, and costlier, litigation than dealing with a handful of individual cases.

In a statement, Microsoft said: "We believe the plaintiffs’ claims are without merit and we are confident we’ll be successful in court.” It also emphasized that Windows 10 upgrades are optional, not mandatory, and that users can roll back to their previous OS version within a month of upgrading to Windows 10 if they wish.
Yeah sure, optional with mandatory X buttons that upgrade immediately...

How to upgrade to Windows 10: What you need to know
Procrastinators beware. If you’re a Windows 7 or Windows 8.1 user, you’re nearing a big deadline: on July 29, the free period to upgrade to Windows 10 expires. If you intend to upgrade but haven’t actually completed the process, we can help.

For consumers, the choice is a simple one: You’ll be upgraded to either one of two versions of Windows 10: Windows 10 Home, or Windows 10 Professional. (This guide doesn’t cover the upgrade process to Windows 10 Mobile for phones.) Microsoft has also released the official retail pricing for Windows 10, in case you’re building another PC.

During the update process, plan to invest some time in prep work and at least an hour or two in the upgrade process itself. And be careful—some of your applications may be left behind or simply turned off.

Microsoft is still offering free Windows 10 upgrades
As it turns out, Microsoft is continuing to offer free Windows 10 upgrades to those who use assistive technologies, such as a screen narrator or magnifier. The best part? Microsoft isn't checking to see whether you are actually using these assistive tools, so basically anyone can still get a free upgrade.
Windows 10 Anniversary Update makes it harder for admins to remove advertising
When the Anniversary Update rolls out to current November Update users, there will no longer be a way to block the obnoxious ads that automatically pin themselves to your PCs start menu when you start it for the first time. In a network with all PCs connected to each other, there is a universal Group Policy that applies to every PC on the network, which means adding a new machine to the family will automatically adjust it; such as disabling the ads and sponsored apps on all new PCs, however, this change will prevent that. By disabling the Policies that take care of the advertising, system admins will have to manually remove the ads from every new PC they get.
Windows 10 passes 20% market share
Windows 10 was installed on over 75 million PCs in its first four weeks. It passed 110 million devices after 10 weeks, 200 million in under six months, 270 million after eight months, 300 million after nine months, and then 350 million after 11 months. Microsoft was aiming for 1 billion devices running Windows 10 “in two to three years,” but recently the company backpedaled on that goal.

Windows Vista managed to gain 0.01 points to 1.22 percent, and Windows XP also somehow rebounded 0.56 points to 10.34 percent. The free upgrade to Windows 10 doesn’t apply to Vista or XP, so while they have been losing share overall, their decline isn’t as steady.
Unless you upgrade XP or Vista to Windows 7 or 8 first...test them for compatibility first.

Windows 10's Anniversary Update is now available!

Show Color on Title bar, but not on Taskbar and Start Menu in Windows 10
With the Anniversary Update, you can show color on the title bar and still have the default (black) color for the Start menu and Taskbar. In earlier Windows 10 builds, you needed a registry hack to independently colorize the title bar. You don’t need to hack it anymore, as it’s now a built-in option.

Open Settings (WinKey + i), click Personalization, Colors. Enable “Show color on title bar”.

With myriad problems now evident, it may be best to skip the Anniversary Update for now
There are very credible reports that the Anniversary Update is making entire volumes/drives invisible, prompting a reformat. The newest version of Win10 refuses to see some drives, identifying them as RAW, and prompting for an NTFS reformat. It’s easy to accidentally reformat the drive.

I’ve seen a report on AskWoody.com that the Anniversary Update makes the entire Group Policy setting for Configure Automatic Updates useless. While the gpedit setting for Configure Automatic Updates is still there, changing the setting there has no effect in the Win10 user interface (Start > Settings > Update & security > Update settings). It’s still too early to tell exactly how that’ll work, but the “Available updates will be downloaded and installed automatically” notice appearing in the Settings app does not inspire confidence.

There are more credible reports about Win10 locking up completely after the Anniversary Update. Redditor KuruQan found out that running a clean install fixes the problem. There are many different solutions proposed, but nothing official from Microsoft. We don’t even have official acknowledgment that the problem exists.

It looks like System Restore gets turned off when you install the Anniversary Update.
Microsoft adds year to Windows 10 support
Microsoft last week bolstered its claim that Windows 10 will be its last operating system by extending the OS's support lifetime to 2026.

After the release last week of Windows 10 Anniversary Update -- officially known as 1607 using the year and month label the company has adopted -- Microsoft refreshed the Windows support lifecycle database to signal a one-year extension to Windows 10 Enterprise.
We may need that year to fix everything!

Using Windows 10’s New “Quick Assist” App (Walkthrough)
Quick Assist is a remote assistance app which is included in the Windows 10 Anniversary Update, but not much advertised. Here is a walk-through on how to use “Quick Assist”.
How to use Windows 10's Active Hours to prevent surprise update installs
If you want to feel totally assured that Windows 10 won't restart your computer and install updates while you're busy working, you'll be pleased to know about the Active Hours feature that Microsoft has added in the Anniversary Update (rolling out on Tuesday, August 2). Mind you, Windows 10 is already pretty good about understanding when your PC is in use, so as not to disrupt your activities with an update. In my experience, most Windows restarts are scheduled for early in the morning when you’re not likely to be using your PC. You can also schedule the update to be installed at a specific time. Even so, Microsoft is giving users even more control over the update process.
Windows Defender Offline Scan Added in Windows 10 Anniversary Update
Windows Defender Offline scan is one of the new settings added by the Windows 10 Anniversary Update. Although Defender Offline has already been a built-in feature in Windows 10 since the early builds, the GUI option is added in the Windows Defender Settings page only after you install the Anniversary Update (v1607).
