Create secure wireless networks on wired or WIFI

Post by burger2227 »

I found that the $15 HooToo TripMate Nano allows users to create their own wireless networks from wired or wireless networks for extra security: Image
Here the device is connected to a USB cable for power and is receiving and broadcasting a wireless network connection as its own.

The blue LED indicates a wireless connection is powered up. The green LED on the right indicates a good network connection has been set.
Neither LED tells you if you are currently connected to the TripMate network, only that it has been set up with an existing network.

After it is powered up, it will be listed in your local network connections list as TripMateNano:
Image
Connect to it using 11111111 as a password and open a new browser page. Doing that in Chrome took me to the page below.

10.10.10.254 asks for a User Name "admin" and password which is left blank upon first use. Setup will ask for a new login password after a network is set up.
Image
There are other settings that can be changed when appropriate including the TripMate network password.

Upon entering the setup, you will be asked for the wireless network you want connected to from a drop down list available by clicking the blue arrow:
Image
Then you must enter that network password. Wired network passwords would be entered after manually connecting it to the box.

The Tripmate has a switch for wired or wireless networks, the USB power cable mini port and a network cable connection port if necessary:
Image
Connecting to a wired network allows a user to connect multiple wireless devices including cell phones that can use WIFI data.

The Reset hole can be pinned to reset the website password to admin and no password if you forget it. The new web page password is set last in Setup:
Image
The USB 2 port can hold a thumb drive or other USB type memory stick and it becomes part of the TripMateNano network.

Pro's:
1) The device can be used on public WIFI networks to create a secure local network other people cannot access.
2) It also allows many other WIFI devices to be connected within 30 feet of the device including cell phones.

Con's:
1) The unit requires power supplied by a USB connection port. Short USB A to mini A cable supplied. No battery with this model, but others do.
2) The web page setup does not allow pasting of network WEP passwords which can be quite long!

The TripMate web menu allows you to use a Wizard to set it up: Image

Some motels may require you to go to a web site first before a connection will occur:
Image

Chrome may not set up all previous pages and instead send you to the setup page above.

Here is a video showing how to connect it to a wired network and use WIFI devices:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cYQoh54cPDw" target="_blank
His USB device apparently took too much power from the Tripmate to run other memory devices.

One is plenty on a small traveling device like this! Use a better powered Tripmate for bigger needs.

I ended up using this device to supply WIFI to a tavern that only had a wired network to an Internet Juke Box.

In Settings you can change the ID name of the device from "TripMateNano and the 11111111 password if you wish.

At the end of using the Wizard to set it up you are asked to enter and confirm a password to get into the web site address later.
If you forget any password or mess up a setting just use the Reset pin hole to reset everything!

If I find any on sale I will let people know if they post a response here.

You can also set up Internet Connection Sharing on Windows 7 or 8 laptops or MAC. See video below:

http://www.omerkhan.com/how-to-connect- ... otel-wifi/" target="_blank

Windows 7 or 8 will require Virtual Router software: http://virtualrouter.codeplex.com/" target="_blank

The video also shows how to use a TripMate network for your Roku. A second video shows how to deal with hotel WIFI only also. Remember you may need a browser to sign in to hotel WIFI on the web too.

I found a Vonets Mini300 WIFI network device that cost about $15 US for wired or wireless networks.
Image
All of the default information is on the bottom of the unit when Reset so you cannot forget.

It automatically detects the proper network mode, wired or WIFI so no switch:
Image
There is a reset button to the left side of the micro USB power port. The wired network port also allows a wired connection from WIFI to a device
as well as creating WIFI from a wired network! It also automatically does that. The blue flashing LED indicates WIFI nearby!

Connect to the Vonets network on a computer and go to HTTP://vonets.cfg" target="_blank to set the repeater.
Image

Sign in using admin and admin and find your local WIFI in hot spot list. Highlight your local WIFI network and click Next.
Image
NOTE: Vonets WIFI networks created will NOT show up in this list!

Use your local WIFI network password, not 12345678 to set it up to connect to it in the configuration page.
Image
You could also rename the SSID to whatever you want as long as it is not already a listed network nearby. Apply the settings and Restart!
After configuring WIFI to WIFI successfully, the WIFI name and password of the Vonets device are not the same as the source hotspot's parameters! The Vonets SSID name and network password will remain 12345678 when signing onto the new network unless they have been specifically changed previously.
Not sure about the above statement as I found that I had to use my WIFI password to get onto the Vonets network clone also! I managed to go back in and change the password to something else, but it got confusing at times!

After connecting the page may look like this and could cause problems even connecting and changing anything when WIFI to WIFI.
Image
I've found that it is easier to connect the device to a wired router and change SSID names and pass phrases there then Restart!

The network list calls the new network your old network name plus _DC or something similar:
Image

Connecting the Vonets directly to the router creates a public WIFI network called Vonets_1815DC or something similar:
Image
Luckily the Verizon FIOS router has some USB ports for power. The blue LED indicates WIFI and the green indicates a wired network connection.

The network list calls it Vonets_1815DC and once connected, you can go to the HTTP://vonets.cfg" target="_blank page to change the Administrator or SSID password:
Image
This network is separate from your existing WIFI so it does not need that password, just 12345678 as the default.

With a wired connection to the Vonets you never lose the configuration site, and can change most security settings:
Image
1) The Repeater SSID name can be changed from Vonets_1815DC to anything with Apply. Don't change the other stuff!

2) The WIFI Security tab allows a new Pass Phrase to be used instead of 12345678: Don't change the other stuff!
Image
This setting was not available in the wireless set up after I entered my network password instead of 12345678... use a wired connection to change defaults

3) After the SSID name and/or password are changed, you must reboot the device! Otherwise they will be saved, but never changed:
Image
This may take a few minutes before the network name and/or password change.

You could set up new passwords and network names with a wired connection before going to your wireless network too.

You can also change the web page Aministrator password in System Setting/Login Settings tab:
Image
Not sure if you need a reboot for that, but avoid the web page on more than one device as it may be blocked!

Network speed is 150MBS on my Windows 7 and 54 MBS on my XP laptop:
Image

Press the Reset button for 5 seconds to reset SSID passwords and ID's to factory settings.

NEXT I will be attempting to create another WIFI network with a wired Belkin WIFI router that only cost $17.

The Vonets device can also bring WIFI to a wired network device, but it did it very slow! Gmail crawled with messages without pictures:
Image
The green LED indicates a wired connection, with the flashing blue LED indicating that there was also WIFI in the area.

The WIFI network was repeated from an existing WIFI signal so it was named after it:
Image
The wiring did the connection for me so I did not connect the WIFI network for the last test. I found I could also do that, but it was slow too!

I also found that I had to use the original WIFI pass phrase to sign on to the new WIFI network. What's the point of that?

I found WIFI to WIFI and WIFI to wired as slower than networks created when wired directly to a router. Even at 1 MB/S

I think that the Hoo Too Tripmate Nano did a better job of creating secure WIFI networks, especially when the existing WIFI required a long security pass phrase!
Both had problems connecting to the device web site after a WIFI to WIFI connection was made. The Vonet's web page at least allowed password pasting!

The $17 Belkin router came today. It has its own wall power supply transformer, a short network cable and a setup CD:
Image
As soon as I plugged it into the Verizon WIFI router, I saw the belkin name in the list of WIFI networks. It came with a card with the name and password.

The Setup instructions tell you to hook a network cable from the router to a computer, but that's stupid! I managed to work around that
even though it told me to call Belkin's Help line.
I did call them and that's when they told me the router was no longer supported...
Image

After signing into the Belkin network, the Setup program sends you to a web page when you click the Advanced Settings button.
Image
The web page that will appear will ask for a Login password, just hit enter unless you specifically have set one previously!

You can change the network SSID name and password there.
Image
I named the SSID 'franksbar' as that is where it will be working. It has a wired network but phone reception has been a big problem there.
Image
The password was changed too to make it easy to remember! Cell phones can now use the WIFI and make calls with some models like the Iphone 6.

I got 150 MB/S speeds right from the start on the Windows 7 and XP desktops, 54 with the XP laptop.
Image

I've decided that this will be the best option for a network to be used in a public place for cell phone operation where
reception is limited in a valley. All 3 of the devices are priced about the same, the router is no longer supported by Belkin, but it will work for my plans!

NOTE: This option cannot be used to connect to WIFI wirelessly!

I retried setting up a Vonets WIFI to wired network connection to my laptop. I Reset the button by holding it in and redid everything
Image
After going to the http://Vonets.cfg page and signing in with admin, admin, I told it to use my local WIFI with the WEP password.
This is the speed I got... 100Mbps managed to work fairly well, but pictures may be out of some views or loading takes more time.
Don't forget to Restart the Vonets device after you give it your local WIFI SSID and password!

After it was set up, I just took it to the Magic Jack unit and plugged that into the wired network connection.
Image
The Vonets unit is powered by the WIFI modem-router USB power above the Magic Jack unit on the UPS battery backup pack below.
That router is backed up by the UPS along with the Magic Jack unit and the phone base unit that holds the dialing number memory.

I was able to make a phone call, but after connecting the voice sound was full of static and recordings said that the internet connection was lost. The yellow LED on the left side of the Magic Jack unit no longer lit up at all either! So much for that idea...

I found a USB stick that creates a WIFI network from any networked computer to run other wireless devices:
Image
The site I bought the device from gave me a link to the software. There may be several sites, all Chinese.

The software on the left is for Xiaomi and the one on right is for the 360 WIFI:
Image

A popup tells you to insert the device in the USB port:
Image

An oval WIFI icon will appear which can be clicked on to set the WIFI name and passkey settings:
Image
On left I renamed the WIFI ID and changed password. Refreshing the Local Networks list shows the new name.

On my laptop, two internet connection monitors show up for WIFI:
Image
The 360 WIFI says it is 150MBps above.

In Network Connections the WIFI network shows up as Wireless Network Connection 3 as a 802.11 USB wireless LAN:
Image

I was able to connect my Nexus 7 tablet to the new network at 54 MBpS:
Image
Twitter would not update for some reason. My normal WIFI runs at 65 MBpS.

This WIFI can be used by smart phones where a wired network only exists to save data use.
It can also be used to make a more secure WIFI network than the current one available.

really informative stuff here but seems a bit "brand specific", using a certain hardware or software. Good info either way!

I have used the HOOTOO Tripmate Travel router along with my ROKU within a hotel WIFI. I was able to create a secure network using the HooToo and bridge to the hotel's WIFI network. There is a really neat video and detailed set of instructions here: http://www.bigpiemedia.com/how-to-setup ... n-a-hotel/ on how to do it.

Wireless-N300 USB Adapter

Post by burger2227 »

Just got an ASUS Wireless-N300 USB Adapter for less than $10 so gonna try it out on my
desktop next week. It offers a WPS button for easier setup with WIFI, but it can be hacked...

More interested in using the AP Mode to offer not only 300 MBPS data, but 150 to other devices like
phone WIFI in hotels so I'm gonna take it on a trip to see how well it works with the W10 laptop later...

Instructions are difficult to read so I did a search: https://www.asus.com/Networking/USBN13/

May need a newer driver than one on CD according to other sites. Need software for WPS and AP!
WPS can be set in the software with a PIN set by you or using the bypass button.
I was only able to connect to a wireless network with the CD driver installed with software.
Even the WIFI and no passkey WPS setup require that the CD software be installed on a PC!

Router ID Passkeys cannot be copied and pasted into setup program. must be entered manually!

The manual can be downloaded in many languages here:
http://www.asus.com/Networking/USBN13_B ... sk_Manual/

The AP wireless sharing mode cannot be used on a wireless network, just a wired one!
The USB adapter supplies 130 Mbps on my wireless network with 3 computers and FIOS TV.
