Spamming Today -- Site Database Corrupted

Post by Pete »

There was a rapid-fire string of Texas Hold'Em Poker spam posts today that corrupted this site's Coranto database which controls almost all of the content on the site.

I was forced to revert to the latest backup of the database: August 6th. All submissions made in the last week have been lost, and you will have to resubmit them. Sorry for the inconvenience.

These spam posts come at regular intervals and are nothing new, but this is the first time that the database has been corrupted by them. I'm going to look into installing some type of image confirmation test for new News posts. I will also be making backups of the database at shorter intervals so that if something like this happens again, we won't lose as many submissions.

why not a simple hack to reject as submits for post with the word Texas and poker in them

or rejecting submits for post that have that URL in them

Well what happens if a QBer makes a Texas hold'em game... the first time I saw the spam, at first that is what I thought until I read it...

And, some of the downloads for the released game are URLs.. that be a problem if they wern't allowed,

I think he meant that specific URL. I think so far every single spam post was pointing to the same site.

Mhh, what you might need is a spam guard... If that works with you server-software...

Or perhaps a bit of a delay, though I'm not sure if you can do that (don't know about the software, heh) so that things don't get automatically posted and you can manually approve or delete them within that time... who knows.
