Android Nexus 7" tablet review

Post by burger2227 »

I got a Nexus 7" 16 GB (2013) Android 4.3 tablet last week from Amazon for the standard price. It will upgrade once a WIFI
connection is made. For some reason it made me enter the router passkey twice. I hope I don't have to enter that Verizon 16
digit key every time I upgrade!

So far they all come in black with a front and rear camera. Travel cases can be ordered in colors separately. I recommend
one as the tablet did not survive a drop test on U Tube too well! Especially side hits! The drop test broke it on concrete dropped
flat on its back the first drop. After that it just got worse. These things need a Gorilla Case!

Power and speaker volume buttons located on the right top side of portrait mode toward back of side bevel are difficult to
accidentally push and even harder to push on purpose.

Battery life is about 7 hours. It takes twice that long to recharge it! The USB charger cable is about 2 feet. Charger is a standard
USB plug in with USB female output. I already have USB adapters to charge it in my car. I'll have to use the Nexus cable though.

If you press the power button while charging a picture of a battery will come up. A lightening bolt in the image tells you it is still
charging and the battery will fill up to full white when it is completed.

Facial recognition lock available or lock screen can be disabled altogether.
No memory card slot. Only port is for USB charging. No wireless charging.
Menu at bottom gets in the way of my fingers, but I am new at this stuff.

Performance is fast and screen is fabulous to look at! Wish Chrome had a better interface.

Warranty is 12 months but Amazon did not tell me that. It just listed that it came with a warranty card. It comes
with 2 warranty books, one in English. To find the coverage terms I had to find it on the UPC label attached inside
of the Warranty book as a number 12 off to the right. Accent on warranty!

The only instructions is a card with a picture of how to connect the USB charger.

The tablet settings icon is located inside of the applications icon list

Don't go to Google Play and buy a FREE guidebook! What a hassle! Why should I have to tell them my credit info to
get a free book? This link takes you to an "untrusted" PDF you can download from GoogleUserContent.com:

Update: I have had a couple or reboots happen all on their own, but for the most part everything works OK.
The tablet seems to always be charging as it takes double the time it can actually be used wireless.

Gmail has its own App that presents a nice list of my emails with icons from relevant sites. I wish it did that on the computer too!

The Drop Box application I added keeps all of the pictures taken by the tablet in a separate Camera Uploads folder
above the Public Folder for privacy.

I tried to add Ad Blocker for Chrome and it wants me to change some access settings before it will work correctly.
I am not ready to do that at this time. Not sure if I should allow certain changes. Any thoughts on this would be appreciated.

Bought an Xtreme Bluetooth keyboard from Newegg. Ad showed it as black. Don't know how they knew my Nexus cover's blue color scheme...
Image
Keyboard has 3 device type keys also as Windows, IOS and Android for use on multiple devices. Just press the device key to use it on a specific device.

A push button on the back near the indicator light sets the keyboard to send out a code number to Bluetooth which you type into the keyboard and hit Enter.

I have also tried it on a Windows XP laptop, but could not get it to work. The code is generated and entered, but it does not work. It appears to
need to be set up every time it is used on a device. The Nexus 7 had Xtreme listed, but I had to enter a new Bluetooth code to get it to work!

Found another @ $20 Bluetooth keyboard as part of a 9" X 7" high tablet holder:
Image
The bottom flap becomes the top flap when folded down. It also has a magnetic closure.

The tablet mount is only slightly less than straight up with the small offset notch above the keyboard.
Image
Tablets may have tendency to tip over on a lap.

The keyboard power, charging and Bluetooth connection buttons are shown below:
Image
The power LED will stay on only when the keyboard is Bluetooth connected. The LED button turns on key back lighting.

When the keyboard is first turned on, the Bluetooth and power LED's both light up for a bit. Neither will stay on until it is connected.
Press the Connect button to pair the keyboard while searching or pairing. The power LED will stay on once connected.

The LED back lighting is plenty bright. Here it is in the dark:
Image
The control buttons are not lit up and it may be hard to find the power switch.

I was not able to get it to work with my XP laptop either. It did dot out the code numbers as I entered them. WEIRD!
If anybody might know a solution or Bluetooth Update I may need please Reply!
