Sleep never works when left alone and I never see the BIOS screen on reboots anymore.
A simple mouse move wakes the laptop up now without hibernate. Takes 2 minutes to use too!

I can still put it to Sleep manually with a quick press of the power button, it goes dark and
a move of the mouse wakes it back up. So it will never Sleep riding in my car without turning
the mouse off. Turning off a Bluetooth mouse will activate the touchpad without a USB
mouse wireless adapter connected. But what good is a PC I can't wake up anyhow?

Microsoft finally supplies fix information about Updates

Meanwhile I decided to try to get one of my cameras to send pictures to the web.
It started with Yawcam Help and finding the URL settings with a way to set my WIFI router.
Image
The URL setting takes you to a page with web and local page links for HTTP or Streaming.

The Configure Router settings page links to the Using UPNP with Yawcam which lists two common router pages: Copy http://192.168.0.1 or http://192.168.1.1 in a browser address bar. Verizon used second one.

I had to sign into the router using the Administrator password on side of router. Admin was already the name:
Image
Then in Port Forwarding settings, selected the desktop PC running Yawcam with BOTH and port 8081 for Streaming video. Any local PC can be used to set up. Also be sure to enable Stream in YawCam on the
computer using the camera! The viewing computer does not need the Yawcam program, just the links.
Warning! You cannot set up more than one PC using the same 8081 port on the router!

The local link listed in Yawcam did not work, but the Web one did. Will have to try it next trip!
Image
Note: You may have to refresh the page when it gets disconnected.

New Critical Updates today. WIFI quit in the middle, had to click in taskbar and reconnect to my service:
Image
Security updates available for Adobe Flash Player

Finally got a reply from M$ Support! More tests, no Update fixes yet. Not sure what i'm supposed to be fixing...
Method 1:

I suggest you to run the Windows Update troubleshooter it will automatically fix some common problems installing updates and check if it helps to resolve the issue. Click the below link: (run days ago, no problems)
http://go.microsoft.com/?linkid=9830262

Method 2:
If the issue still persists, try the below method and check if it helps or not:
I would recommend you to reset the windows update component manually. Resetting Windows Update Components will fix corrupt Windows Update Components and help you to install the Updates quickly. Follow the below steps:
1. Press Windows Key + X on the keyboard and then select “Command Prompt (Admin)” from the menu.

2. Stop the BITS, Cryptographic, MSI Installer and the Windows Update Services. To do this, type the following commands at a command prompt. Press the “ENTER” key after you type each command.
net stop wuauserv (responds successful)
net stop cryptSvc (responds successful)
net stop bits (responds not running)
net stop msiserver (responds not running)

3. Now rename the SoftwareDistribution and Catroot2 folder. You can do this by typing the following commands in the Command Prompt. Press the “ENTER” key after you type each command.
ren C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution SoftwareDistribution.old
ren C:\Windows\System32\catroot2 Catroot2.old

4. Now, let’s restart the BITS, Cryptographic, MSI Installer and the Windows Update Services. Type the following commands in the Command Prompt for this. Press the ENTER key after you type each command.
net start wuauserv (responds start success)
net start cryptSvc (responds start success)
net start bits (responds start success)
net start msiserver (responds start success)

5. Type Exit in the Command Prompt to close it and then restart the computer.
Also refer the link below for more information
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3105210
Each of the bold commands above can be pasted into the command window using Edit in the header.
Right click the DOS window header, select Edit and then select paste. Check that it copied and press enter.

Note that you may lose Update History after renaming folders!

Woke up laptop and Start, task bar and Action Center do not work!

Went to M$ Help and today's Cumulative Update has also affected others the same way:
Today's Win10 Updates screwed up my Upgraded-from-Win7 PC

Used Ctrl + Alt + Del to Sign Off and went to Lock Screen. Signed in and everything works for now.

Apparently today's Support "Help" has rid me of my Update History FOREVER!
Image

Update Diagnosis now finds this! I checked that first as they asked...

Here is the NEW change log now provided with updates. Note mention of taskbar fix.

Yesterday I updated my only XP desktop left and was able to update Adobe Flash by using the link found
in the Uninstall Programs list. An update link was supplied in the More Information box.

Meanwhile Java popped up with an update all on is own! After the update, Java is verified up to date!
Even though Java did warn that the newer version was not for XP, it has to be a lot safer!

For XP Typing msconfig into the Start Run box brings up this info in the Startup tab:
Image
jusched is the Java Update scheduler and the box should checked in XP.

Have yet to EVER see a Java Update on Windows 10 offered!

Found that Java was disabled in my Win 10 laptop Startup settings in Task Manager:
Image
Highlight with a click and press Enable/Disable button at bottom. Startup impact will take a few restarts...!

In Windows 10, Task Manager can be found by Right clicking the Start button instead of using Ctrl + Alt + Del.

Hopefully enabling it will get future Java updates on my WX laptop...

Adding insult to injury, Internet Explorer apparently is blocking Java even with Medium-High Security set on the WX desktop.
Found Java Configuration listed in Apps list under Java. There is a setting to enable Java in your browser, apparently IE:
Image
I checked the box and clicked Apply and was greeted with a HUGE WARNING!. So even checking for updates is DANGEROUS!
So Java SE STILL REFUSES TO UPDATE to a SAFE VERSION. Me? I'm going back to UNCHECK THAT Enable box, because I hate IE!

New update for the Win 10 64 bit desktop:
Image

It felt so nice it installed it TWICE!
Image

Belarc had it listed before the update with those 2 Java SE updates.

Those 2 links take you to documentation, a critical Java Update circle jerk, and to updates you do not need in desperation.

Java SE updates can be installed MULTIPLE times without version checks or warnings!

Day FIVE on laptop, things get slower and scroll harder!
Chrome tabs take 30 seconds to appear or Kill warning box comes up waiting.

Started this post but the Bluetooth keyboard quit responding.
Start Power Menu Reboot sent laptop into a forever Rebooting circle jerk!

Reliability is better. The My Radar App crashed today though...

The Java Updates and Uninstall of older versions was also recorded.

Day 5 running on the laptop and things are getting a bit slower. Not too bad.

Got a new 9 cell battery for it which seems to just last about as long as the old one...
Instructions say to charge, discharge by running down twice at least once a month. We shall see.

With a half hour estimated battery life, the WIFI stopped working! Plugged in and now works OK.
Clicking the WIFI icon in the taskbar shows the local networks, clicked it and it asked for passkey!
Tried again and second time it connected automatically without the passkey prompt.

Had to reboot to keep WIFI... We shall see.

Intermittent WIFI even after reboot!
Lost a post and had to start all over. Now I have to CHECK the WIFI icon before posting...GRRRRRR

WARNING! Do not UNINSTALL XP DRIVERS to try to upgrade them!
Some old working drivers will not install in the new Windows 10 OS!

So I go to Restore from a Restore Point right? Maybe I'm stupid, but it isn't easily found!
I have no way to remove the last Update thanks to M$ Support! No history...

FORGET typing "Restore" into Search box in Settings or Control Panel!
A web search says try SYSTEM RECOVERY, not this obvious Recovery in Update Settings...
Image
No Restore Points here! RESET destroys most of your programs, leaves your files alone!

So what do I have? ONE WHOLE RESTORE POINT from YESTERDAY! How'd I even get that?
Image
I am definitely going to find a way to create more! Will Windows 10 destroy them too?

Didn't notice the box for more restore points, made one just to see how it worked:

Guess what I found, Java in Control Panel, Programs link above Uninstall Programs link:
Image
Version button displays current version. Also can set updates and if Internet Explorer can use Java.

Update tab sets time and day to automatically search or Update Now:
Image

Security tab Enables Java in Internet Explorer browser, NOT in IE ITSELF!
Image
Security settings are also available there. Never had Java set on the 64 bit PC and never missed it!
Wasted a lot of time trying to enable IE to use Java, just to CHECK IF Java was up to date!...

Chrome updates itself for all this stuff. Wake up M$!

Still no Updates for Java SE on 64 bit desktop!

M$ Support finally said that the update I had problems with is superseded:
Cumulative update KB3135173 superseded (replaced) cumulative update KB3124262 on 09 Feb-16.
If KB3124262 (27 Jan-16) is still being offered via Windows Update, something's very wrong with your install of Win10.
Nice to know that somebody else had problems with that update. I also had KB3124262 installed twice!

Now I lose WIFI after 4 days running along with the taskbar not hiding and Start clicks not responding well...

Microsoft calls out Windows “cleaner” products that ask for payment before fixes
To deal with these troublesome software programs, Microsoft’s Windows Defender for Windows 10 will classify them as unwanted software, and accordingly detect and remove them. The classification is determined by an objective criteria developed by Microsoft for how malware programs “back up their claims, so that you have the ability to assess what the program found and deems to be errors, and determine if you’d like to take the program’s recommended actions.” Simply put, if programs mess with system files without explaining to the user why in order to extract some money from Windows users, Microsoft will treat them accordingly.
Problem is that Windows Defender disarms itself when you add almost any other Anti-Virus program.
Tried using just Defender for a month on TWO Windows 10 computers and was infected within weeks!
That happened despite also running MalwareBytes which Defender does not mind.

The Enhanced Mitigation Experience Toolkit (EMET) is designed to help customers with their defense in depth strategies against cyberattacks, by helping detect and block exploitation techniques that are commonly used to exploit memory corruption vulnerabilities. EMET anticipates the most common actions and techniques adversaries might use in compromising a computer, and helps protect by diverting, terminating, blocking, and invalidating those actions and techniques. EMET helps protect your computer systems even before new and undiscovered threats are formally addressed by security updates and antimalware software. EMET benefits enterprises and all computer users by helping to protect against security threats and breaches that can disrupt businesses and daily lives.
Warning! EMET requires configuration for each protected program! Recommended for businesses.

Microsoft adds new security enhancements to its cloud offerings
Microsoft is adding a range of new security management and reporting features to its Office 365 and Azure cloud services as part of the company's holistic approach to enterprise security announced last year.

In April, the company will release a new product called Microsoft Cloud App Security that will allow customers to gain better visibility, control and security for data hosted in cloud apps like Office 365, Box, SalesForce, ServiceNow and Ariba. The new product is based on technology from Adallom, a cloud access security broker Microsoft acquired in September.
Update on the Developer Opportunity and Windows 10
The Web Bridge (Hosted Web Apps) helps bring HTML and JavaScript web-based apps to the Windows Store and takes advantage of the rich capabilities of the Windows platform, such as Live Tiles, Cortana integration, in-app purchase capabilities and more. This shipped as part of the standard Windows 10 SDK in July and we’ve already seen adoption from companies such as Shazam and Yahoo.

Project “Centennial” helps bring existing Win32 and .NET-based apps to the Windows Store and is in testing with a set of developers now. We’ll have an early iteration of the tools soon, and then we’ll expand the program and support a broader range of developers.

The Windows Bridge for iOS (project “Islandwood”), enables developers to bring Objective-C iOS apps to the Windows Store, was released to GitHub as an open source project in August and we’ve been releasing updates to it frequently. Just last week, we released an update which included the first ARM32 preview compiler drop.

Malicious websites exploit Silverlight bug that can pwn Macs and Windows
The critical code-execution vulnerability, which Microsoft patched last month, was actively exploited for two years in attack code owned by Italy-based exploit broker Hacking Team. As Ars reported last July, the Silverlight exploit came to light following a hack on Hacking Team's network that exposed gigabytes worth of private e-mails and other data. Researchers with Russian antivirus provider Kaspersky Lab later discovered the vulnerability being exploited in the wild and privately reported it to Microsoft.

Now, exploit code for the patched vulnerability is being distributed through Angler, one of several toolkits that criminals use to seed websites with code that carry out drive-by attacks. The Silverlight attack was spotted earlier this week by a researcher who goes by the moniker Kafeine. The vulnerability is indexed as CVE-2016-0034.
Here are my current laptop updates listed in the Control Panel Installed Updates list including Silverlight:
Image
To find them go to Settings, Update & Security, Advanced, View Your Update History, Uninstall Updates

Users who can browse the Internet without Silverlight are best off uninstalling it. Everyone else should religiously update it as soon as patches become available. Patched versions are 5.1.41212.0 or higher.

Microsoft announces Windows 10 ‘Advanced Threat Protection’ for Enterprise
Microsoft has today announced a new security service for Windows 10 enterprise users called “Windows Defender Advanced Threat Protection” that aims to help detect, investigate and even respond to incoming cyber attacks on an enterprise network. This new service provides a new “post-breach layer of protection” on top of other Windows 10 security features such as Windows Hello, Device Guard and more.
This survey claims app devs make more money on Windows Phone than Android or iOS
Coming over to the most interesting bit of the survey, developers tied to Microsoft’s operating system earn the most money — Windows Phone developers can net around $11,400 a month as per the report. On the other hand, Android developers make the least money, that is, $4,900 a month. Things are still better for those who are tied to iOS as they can earn, on average, $8,100 a month. Well, the reason cited is that “it has a niche audience and there are not as many apps available to that small segment of the population that have a Windows Phone.”

This makes sense if you think about it. Android is the most popular operating system and has the most number of developers. So finding one in the app marketplace is quite easier compared to Windows Phone, which despite being the third most popular OS, has a very small user base. The report says that Android is still the most preferred operating system where 86 percent of developers are building Android apps while iOS is the focus for 57 percent. Windows Phone is once again the least preferred by developers — only 21 percent are working on it.
Windows 10 deleting some user apps without permission isn't news
The problem actually cropped up back in November, when the first major update for the new operating system was rolled out. The November Update reset privacy settings and default apps for some users, and was found to be also uninstalling some third party desktop programs without asking.

A thread on Reddit mentioned System information tool Speccy, CPU-Z, SmartFTP, and AMD Catalyst Control Center among the programs that Windows 10 automatically removed.

Microsoft pulled the November update, and then reissued a version which didn’t reset user settings. Updates to Speccy and the like fixed the problem of the apps being removed for most people.

This might be a good idea if updating drivers would create problems:

I decided to change the SearchOrderConfig key value from 1 to 0 using options below:
0 = "No, let me choose what to do - Never install driver software from Windows Update"
1 = "Yes, do this automatically (recommended)"
2 = "No, let me choose what to do - Install driver software from Windows Update if it is not found on my computer.

Re: So you want to install Windows 10 on an XP?

Installed latest Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Version 1511 (KB3140743) on my laptop.

Took about 2 minutes to boot and then had this screen with busy circle for 5 minutes:

After lock screen and passkey entry it just had the circle turning in the center until I tried the Windows key.
The taskbar and desktop icons magically appeared... hope this is not another bad update!

7 ways Windows 10 pushes ads at you, and how to stop them
In February, Microsoft began displaying ads on Windows 10’s lock screen:

Settings > Personalization > Lock Screen and turn off “Get fun facts, tips, tricks, and more on your lock screen.”
While there’s no way to disable the ads in Solitaire and Minesweeper (sacrilege! horror!) short of paying $10 per year per app($9.99)—not even a one-time purchase, but a subscription
My Key West sunrise picture for the lock screen is from my Facebook page which STILL needs a login!

Day 4 since latest Cumulative Update and everything appears to be working well on the Inspiron E1505 laptop.
Taskbar is still hiding and things woke up fairly quickly this morning.

The Pros and Cons of Windows 10’s “Fast Startup” Mode

My existing laptop settings are shown below. Needed to click “Change settings that are currently unavailable” :

I turned off Hibernate because the laptop would not wake up again while in Sleep modes with it on.

This laptop had the same problem with XP in hibernate too.
I may turn Fast Startup off next boot to see what happens...

Installed a Drop Box app from the Windows Store. It does not sync files to the device!
The app allows you to work with your files or download files to your device when needed.
I had already installed the same app on my Windows Phone and it saved the login info.

When files are synced to a device, they are downloaded to it and it takes up drive space.
The Drop Box desktop program will sync files when installed so I never installed it, however
viewing the files was not as nice through the web page and required a login saved in Chrome.

Why Desktop Apps Aren’t Available in the Windows Store (Yet)
Microsoft would like to only distribute safe apps that aren’t a security, privacy, or performance risk. That’s why it excludes desktop apps, which it can’t guarantee won’t cause problems. Microsoft would prefer that people created universal apps and distributed them through the Store, as the system can manage these apps and ensure a better experience.
Epic CEO: “Universal Windows Platform can, should, must, and will die”
"With its new Universal Windows Platform (UWP) initiative, Microsoft has built a closed platform-within-a-platform into Windows 10, as the first apparent step towards locking down the consumer PC ecosystem," said Sweeney. "Microsoft has launched new PC Windows features exclusively in UWP and is effectively telling developers you can use these Windows features only if you submit to the control of our locked-down UWP ecosystem."

"PC UWP can, should, must, and will die as a result of industry backlash," Sweeney said.

UWP was launched as a way for developers to create applications that could run across several devices, including Windows 10-powered PCs, mobiles, tablets, and even Internet of Things devices. However, all UWP apps must be sold through the Windows Store where Microsoft takes a 30 percent cut. While not criticising the Windows Store itself—"I believe Microsoft has every right to operate a PC app store and to curate it how they choose," he said—Sweeney is accusing Microsoft of "unfairly disadvantaging" competing stores like Steam and Origin, as well as those who sell games directly to customers.

Day five with Cumulative Update on laptop with no big problems. Task bar quit hiding yesterday...
It got slower yesterday mostly due to Chrome tabs. Facebook and Twitter apps closed too.
Maybe Chrome was updated too as it seems fine today though I have used it less with 70 degree days.

Microsoft pushes back Windows 10 'Redstone' 2 to Spring 2017
Microsoft's second major set of new features for Windows 10, known as 'Redstone 2,' are now a spring 2017 deliverable, meant to coincide with a new wave of Windows 10 hardware, sources say.
This won't affect my computers much as the hardware is old and set in its ways...

Microsoft now plans March Windows 10 Mobile rollout
Unlike the previous schedule, reported by VentureBeat at the end of January, this one separates the upgrade from the service update. In other words, whereas the February rollout would have seen the update bundled into the upgrade, in March they are expected to be two distinct processes.

The rollout is said to begin passively, from Microsoft’s perspective, in that users will need to initiate it manually from their handsets. Only afterwards, on an unspecified timetable, will the company begin actively pushing the new firmware to eligible devices.
Oh good, maybe they will have another Get Windows 10 nag icon...

Microsoft doesn’t need Windows anymore

At 10% of revenue they have found many new ways to rip us off besides Windows Phone! Office 365 anyone?
