Windows 10 2004: Automatic upgrades coming to more PCs still on older versions
The expanded roll out of Windows 10 version 2004 means that Microsoft will begin automatically offering the feature update to more machines currently using older versions of Windows 10 that are nearing end-of-service and will therefore no longer receive security updates.

Microsoft doesn't state which versions it will target for an update, but Windows 10 version 1809 is the next in line to no longer get security updates. This is set to happen on November 10, 2020,
The Windows 10 'End-of-Service' myth
Microsoft publishes an “End of Service” date for each version of Windows 10. While you might think you can hold onto your version of Win10 until that date, Microsoft starts pushing you onto the next version four months early. That takes a big bite out of the promised 18-month lifespan.
Updates until the device can't take it anymore!

Edge browser crashes if you use Google as your default search engine
If you have Google set as the default engine and try to type in the search bar, the browser may crash. The problem is related to “Search Suggestions” and when that API is called, the browser crashing instantly.

I am seeing it on my dev and release channel builds of the browser. If you have been experiencing this issue, you can navigate to edge://settings/search and turn off the feature as a workaround.
Install previews only on test PCs; to keep them off your production/personal systems,
do not click "Check for updates." As we have said many times, clicking that option does not simply show available updates — it installs them.
I recommend that you skip the following Win10 preview patches:

Cumulative updates:
4568831 for Version 2004
4559004 for Version 1903 and 1909
4559003 for Version 1809 and Server 2019

.NET Framework:
4562899 for Version 2004
4562900 for Versions 1903 and 1909
4567327 for Version 1809 and Server 2019

Windows 10 turns thumbs down on CCleaner
"While the bundled applications themselves are legitimate, bundling of software, especially products from other providers, can result in unexpected software activity that can negatively impact user experiences," according to Microsoft's PUA notice. "To protect Windows users, Microsoft Defender Antivirus detects CCleaner installers that exhibit this behavior as potentially unwanted applications."

The free version of CCleaner is packaged with Google Chrome browser, Google Toolbar, Avast Free Antivirus and AVG Antivirus Free.

Microsoft stated that while users can decline to authorize automatic installation of the bundled programs, some users inadvertently install them anyway. Microsoft said it objects to "misleading or inaccurate claims about files, registry entries, or other items on your PC."

Microsoft Defender warns users of its concerns and then allows users to either halt or proceed with installation.

Microsoft now lets you run Android apps in Windows 10
Microsoft has announced a new feature that allows Windows 10 users running Insider builds to launch their Android apps directly in Windows 10.

This feature is only supported on select Samsung Galaxy devices and allows Android to stream apps to your Windows 10 devices. To use this feature, Samsung Galaxy users must first link their device with Windows 10 using the Your Phone app.

Once this is done, they can select the 'Link to Windows' button, and a list of the available apps will be displayed in Windows 10, as demonstrated.

The new version of Microsoft Edge is included in a Windows system update, so the option to uninstall it or use the legacy version of Microsoft Edge will no longer be available.

Windows 10 Device Manager loses the ability to search online for driver updates
Microsoft has been slowly moving functionality from the Control Panel applets to the Modern Settings in Windows 10, but long-time Windows users may be annoyed by the latest change in Windows 10 version 2004 (Build 19041.423), noticed by WindowsLatest.

In this version of Windows 10, Microsoft removed the ability for Device Manager to search online for driver updates, meaning the app can only update drivers that have already been installed on your PC or downloaded earlier.

To download updated drivers from Microsoft’s catalogue you now have to go to Settings > Update and Security > Windows Update > View Optional Updates > Driver Updates.

In Windows 10 Build 19041.450 or newer, Microsoft said it has restored the Windows 7 era optional updates page, which allows you to discover new updates to drivers and non-security features.

This feature removes the need to get driver updates via Device Manager. Instead, you’ll be able to access the optional updates for drivers or security features under Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update > View optional updates.

Microsoft delays Windows 10 1803 end of service due to pandemic
Microsoft today announced that the scheduled end of service date for the Enterprise, Education, and IoT Enterprise editions of Windows 10, version 1803 is being pushed back to May 11, 2021, due to the current public health situation.

Windows 10 Version 1803 (otherwise known as the April 2018 Update) should have reached end of service on November 10, 2020, according to the Windows lifecycle fact sheet.

This means that devices running Windows 10 1803 Enterprise, Education, and IoT Enterprise editions will continue to receive monthly security updates through May 11, 2021, through Windows Update, Windows Server Update Services, and the Microsoft Update Catalog.

Microsoft Defender can ironically be used to download malware
A recent update to Windows 10's Microsoft Defender antivirus solution ironically allows it to download malware and other files to a Windows computer.

Legitimate operating system files that can be abused for malicious purposes are known as living-off-the-land binaries or LOLBINs.

In a recent Microsoft Defender update, the command-line MpCmdRun.exe tool has been updated to include the ability to download files from a remote location, which could be abused by attackers.

With this new feature, Microsoft Defender is now part of the long list of Windows programs that can be abused by local attackers.
Latest Windows 10 Cumulative update breaks ‘Sleep mode’
Microsoft’s September 2020 optional update (KB4571744) seems to be causing some trouble for those who are running Windows 10 May 2020 Update(a.k.a Windows 10 version 2004). While the update comes with fixes for critical issues, improvements, KB4571744 is far from perfect, just like pretty much all the previous cumulative updates. Some users are reporting that the optional update KB4571744 broke Windows 10’s ‘Sleep mode.’

After the rollout of the latest Windows 10 Cumulative update, some users are reportedly facing an issue where their PC keeps waking up from sleep mode. To be more specific, the sleep mode issue occurs when the KB4571744 update is pending on PCs running Windows 10 version 2004. “When I close the lid, press the power button, or select Sleep in the power menu or the win-x menu, instead of sleeping, the screen simply turns off, and my laptop does not go to sleep even after leaving it alone all night,” one user wrote on Feedback Hub. Similar complaints can also be found on Microsoft’s forum website.

What is worse is that we don’t have there is a workaround available yet, though there is a temporary solution available if you’re interested.
Windows 10 2004 Patch Tuesday problem: Update breaks WSL2, say users
Microsoft's Patch Tuesday security update for Windows 10 version 2004 has reportedly broken Windows Subsystem for Linux 2 (WSL2).

Multiple Windows 10 version 2004 users are reporting they're unable to launch WSL2 after installing Tuesday's security update, detailed in KB4571756. The update pushes Windows 10 2004 up to build number 19041.508.

WSL2 provides a full Linux kernel built into WSL2, as well as improved system-call support for all Linux apps, including Docker, FUSE, rsync, and more. WSL2 shipped with Windows 10 version 2004, aka the May 2020 Update, and recently was made available for Windows 10 1903 and 1909.

KB4576754 update force installs new Edge on Windows 10 2004, 1909, 1903, and 1809
Today, we noticed an Edge update for Windows 10 version 2004, KB4576754 has been installed quietly on our device and grouped under ‘Quality updates’ under the Update History. The update installs the Edge version 84.522.68.

A majority of IT administrators polled this summer said that the twice-a-year Windows 10 feature upgrades are not useful – or rarely so – a stunning stance considering how much effort Microsoft puts into building the updates.

About 58% of nearly 500 business professionals who are responsible for servicing Windows at their workplaces said that Windows 10 feature upgrades – two annually, one each in the spring and fall – were either not useful (24%) or rarely useful (34%).

Windows 10 is pushing old drivers updates that you should avoid
Users are reporting that inappropriate driver updates are getting pushed to Windows 10 devices which aren’t registered for the Insider program.

The update in the question is “Intel – System”, which was pushed out last week alongside other optional driver updates for Windows 10 version 2004 (May 2020 Update).

We’ve also observed users report another bug where the same driver update will reappear for download after successful installation.
The Drivers are located in the View Optional Update list...

It is NOT recommended that you update the drivers unless you have problems!

Windows 10 to Start Warning Users of Imminent SSD Failure
Seeing this notification pop up is your signal to stop whatever it is you are doing and focus on backing up all your data. There's a good chance that super-fast SSD you've been relying on (hopefully for several years), is about to reach its end of life.

It's possible to check the health of a drive at any time in Build 20226. Simply navigate to Settings > System > Storage > Manage disks and volumes > Properties, where the Drive Health information is located. There you'll see the estimated remaining life of the drive, its current temperature, and any warnings in red text. There's also the option to "Back up now" for convenience.

Windows 10 upgrades blocked after installing KB4577062
Microsoft says that customers who install the optional KB4577062 update for Windows 10 versions 1903 and 1909 will encounter issues upgrading to newer Windows 10 versions on some devices.

KB4577062 was released on September 16, 2020, with the main highlight being that it enables an Internet Explorer 11 notification to inform users about Adobe Flash's end of support in December 2020.

"When updating to Windows 10, version 1903 or Windows 10, version 1909 from any previous version of Windows 10, you might receive a compatibility report dialog with 'What needs your attention' at the top and the error, 'Continuing with the installation of Windows will remove some optional features. You may need to add them back in Settings after the installation completes'," Microsoft explains.

"This is caused by the Windows 10 Setup Dynamic Update (DU) being unable to download required packages."

While Microsoft doesn't mention that the compatibility issues caused by KB4577062 also affect newer Windows 10 releases, Günter Born reports that users have also seen this warning when trying to upgrade to Windows 10, version 2004 (aka the May 2020 Update).
Windows “Ping of Death” bug revealed – patch now!
If the person running the script can aim a specially crafted IPv6 network packet at your computer – specifically, a booby-trapped ICMP packet – then they can bring you down without warning.

You see a Blue Screen of Death (BSoD), and any work you hadn’t saved is lost, probably forever.

CVE-2020-16898 | Windows TCP/IP Remote Code Execution Vulnerability downloads

Windows 10 now blocks some third-party drivers from installing
This issue is caused by improperly formatted driver catalog files that trigger the errors during the driver validation process as Microsoft explains.

Starting with the October 2020 updates, Windows requires DER-encoded PKCS#7 content to be valid and correctly embedded in catalog files.

"Catalogs files must be signed per section 11.6 of describing DER-encoding for SET OF members in X.690," Microsoft adds.

Users who encounter these errors while attempting to install a third-party driver are advised to ask their driver vendor or device manufacturer (OEM) for an updated and correctly signed driver.

After outcry, Microsoft presses pause on unsolicited Windows 10 web app installs
Originally, Microsoft tells The Verge, the idea was that any website you pinned to the Start Menu would launch in Microsoft Edge, and it simply intended to turn those shortcuts into more visible tiles now. But — in what Microsoft is calling a bug — the change also turned its existing Microsoft Office web shortcuts into PWA web apps as well. That’s something you can normally do from inside the Edge browser, but not something that would happen by itself.

Windows 10 20H2 is released, here are the new features
Microsoft is rolling out the next version of Windows 10 called "20H2" and the update is available for those who manually check for updates using the Settings app.

20H2 Update is not a huge release and it does not bring a major overall to key features of Windows 10, but Microsoft says this update comes with a lot of improvements that should improve overall user experience.

Microsoft is rolling out the feature update via an enablement package that allows you to update your system very quickly with a single reboot.

Microsoft will forcibly open some websites in Edge instead of Internet Explorer
Starting next month, users trying to access certain websites will see IE refuse to load the URL and automatically open the site in Edge instead.

This forced IE-to-Edge behavior is part of Microsoft's Internet Explorer deprecation plans.

Microsoft has been gradually rolling out the feature for testing purposes for some Windows users since the release of Edge 84 this summer.

However, with the release of Edge 87, scheduled for next month, Microsoft plans to enable the forced IE-to-Edge action for all IE users.
Next they will force you to use EDGE to open M$ sites like they did with IE for a while...

Microsoft: Windows 10 1809 reaches end of service next week
Microsoft today reminded customers that some editions of Windows 10, version 1809 (also known as the October 2018 Update) will reach its end of service next week.

For products that reach their end of service, Microsoft stops providing technical support, as well as bug and security fixes for newly discovered issues and vulnerabilities.

Microsoft fixes Windows 10 chkdsk bug causing boot failures
While Microsoft doesn't say which Windows 10 versions are affected by this new known issue, the bug was acknowledged on the dedicated pages for the KB4592438 and KB4586853 updates issued for Windows 10 versions 2004 and 20H2 in December and November, respectively.

Microsoft has also provided mitigation measures for customers who already tried to run chkdsk and inadvertently damaged their computers' file system.

To repair their devices' boot capability, users are advised to go through the following procedure:

The device should automatically start up into the Recovery Console after failing to start up a few times.
Select Advanced options.
Select Command Prompt from the list of actions.
Once Command Prompt opens, type: chkdsk /f
Allow chkdsk to complete the scan, this can take a little while. Once it has completed, type: exit
The device should now start up as expected. If it restarts into Recovery Console, select Exit and continue to Windows 10.
After going through all the above steps, your device might automatically run chkdsk again on restart to fix any logical or physical errors.

However, once it completes the check, the computer should once again start up as expected.

Microsoft is developing a new way to navigate Windows 10 computers, a “voice launcher” that will let users interact with the computer using their voice.

The voice launcher will work with files and apps, and it will be available anywhere in Windows 10 where there’s a search field.

The feature is in testing and should be available to all Windows 10 users in the October 2021 Update.

Microsoft has already confirmed next update for Windows 10 will automatically remove Flash Player. Since Flash Player is nearing its final curtain, Adobe has now issued a new pop-up alert reminding users to remove the software for good.

In September 2020, Microsoft confirmed that it’s working on a new automatic Windows Update which will remove the Flash Player from Control Panel and other areas. The tech giant also published an optional update labelled as “Update for the removal of Adobe Flash Player”.

As you may be aware, Microsoft and Adobe are planning to pull support for Flash in early 2021. Ahead of the deadline, Adobe has now started showing pop-up notifications on Windows PCs where Flash Player is still being used.

Microsoft is putting a news feed in the Windows 10 taskbar
It's going to show up automatically, although you can easily remove it by right-clicking on it. Then, you can personalize it. You can say that you want to see "More stories like this" or "Fewer stories like this". You'll get updates for news, weather, sports, and more, and news will come from over 4,500 sources such as The New York Times and BBC.
Something nobody asked for...

File recovery is getting easier on Windows 10 in the next update
The regular mode is easier than the other methods and anyone with basic knowledge of Command Prompt should be able to recover their files. While the regular mode is more user friendly, it might not work if the free space in your drive was overwritten, especially if your PC comes with a solid-state drive (SSD).

If you’re trying to recover files that were deleted a long time ago, Microsoft recommends using the new ‘extensive mode’, which works even when a disk has become corrupted.

Since the initial release of Windows File Recovery in 2020, Microsoft says it has received valuable feedback from the users and more improvements will be released to the tool in the coming months.

How to use Meet Now to make free video calls on Windows 10
On Windows 10, Meet Now is a feature, part of the Skype communication platform, which allows you to quickly connect with family and friends using voice and video without sign ups or additional downloads.

The feature appears as a camera button in the taskbar notification area on devices running the Windows 10 May 2020 Update and higher releases. It allows you to quickly create a special link that you can share with other people and use with a web browser to make free video calls that can last 24 hours with up to 99 other people. You only need a camera, microphone, and a supported browser, including Microsoft Edge or Google Chrome.

Windows 10 Sun Valley '21H2' update: What we know so far
With the upcoming Windows 10 21H1 feature update being a minor release with few improvements, Microsoft will likely include all of the new features they have introduced in Insider builds in Windows 10 21H2.

Microsoft plans to release Windows 10 21H2 in the fall of 2021 after Windows 10 21H1 is released in the spring and Windows 10X afterward.

Codenamed "Sun Valley." Windows 10 21H2 will be a full-featured update that includes numerous new features and improvements for the Start Menu, Taskbar, Action Center, and more, which we have outlined below.

Microsoft plans to roll out support for text predictions to Word next month
According to a recent entry to the Microsoft 365 roadmap, text predictions will roll out to Microsoft Word users in March. Microsoft notes that the feature will help "users write more efficiently by predicting text quickly, timely and accurately."

Once rolled out, Word users will see grayed out predictions which can be accepted by pressing the 'Tab' key or rejected by pressing the 'Esc' key. Over time, these predictions will get better based on the user's writing style. If you are not interested in using predictions, you will be able to turn them off completely as well.

Microsoft starts force installing Windows 10 20H2 on more devices
Microsoft is ramping up the forced rollout of Windows 10, version 20H2 to more devices approaching end of service (EOS), as part of a new rollout phase.

This new automated feature update rollout phase follows the addition of Windows 10 2004 to the broad deployment channel in February, which made it available to everyone via Windows Update.

Windows 10 20H2 is also rolling out to users manually checking for updates (seekers) on devices running Windows 10 1903 or later starting October 2020.

If you are running a Windows 10 version nearing EoS and you're not offered to update via Window Update, you should check the Windows 10 Health Dashboard for any known hardware blocks affecting your device.

Microsoft should notify you if your computer is blocked from upgrading by a compatibility hold. The only known blocks for Windows 10 20H2 updates are for devices with Conexant ISST audio drivers.

When Windows bug fixes go bad, IT can now roll back individual changes
Microsoft has announced a new enterprise-only flexibility in Windows servicing that lets IT professionals roll back individual non-security elements of an update when a change breaks something.

The feature, dubbed "Known Issue Rollback," aka KIR, is an unusually frank admission that the company's nearly six-year-long experiment of forcing customers to either accept everything in an update or pass on the update entirely, is flawed.

"Even as quality has improved over the last five years, we do acknowledge that sometimes things can and do go wrong," Namrata Bachwani, principal program manager lead, said in a March 2 session video from Microsoft's all-virtual Ignite conference. "In the past, you had two choices: all or nothing," Bachwani continued. "You either take it all, so you install the update and you get all the great fixes that you want and the problem, which is causing an issue for your customers. Or you take nothing.
Windows 10 crashes when printing due to Microsoft March updates
The Windows 10 KB5000802 and KB5000808 cumulative updates released yesterday are causing Blue Screen of Death crashes when printing to network printers.

Yesterday, Microsoft released the Windows 10 KB5000802 and KB5000808 cumulative updates as part of the March 2021 Patch Tuesday.

Since then, there has been a constant stream of complaints that printing is causing Windows 10 to crash with an "APC_INDEX_MISMATCH for win32kfull.sys" blue screen of death crash.

This indicates that Microsoft has pulled the updates from Windows Update while they look into the issues. However, the updates are still available via the Microsoft Update Catalog.

Furthermore, some of our machines are being offered the KB4601382 Preview cumulative update released on February 24th, but not yesterday's KB5000802 update, indicating that a security update is likely causing the crashes.
