The Final Say From: Jeff Rapp Date: Sunday, November 16, 1998 8:00 PM Sorry for the delay on this issue. Not too much to say tonight. If anyone is looking for a semi-good TI-85 calculator for use in math classes, I have one for sale. $40 o.b.o. It includes manual in execelent condition. The calculator locks-up during ASM game playing due to a bad (possibly ROM) chip. The math functions and graphing all work fine. Once again, it is great for math classes. I am also looking for a new game for the Best of QBasic on the QBasic Place website. If anyone knows of an execelent game or program, please email it to me. Thanks! Aukerman Date: Monday, November 09, 1998 10:31 PM Jeff: I had a good chuckle over the lively response to my suggestion that Basic Screen 12 has merits overlooked. In reply: First, hats off to Zephyr Software and their SVGA extensions for QuickBASIC and PDS7. Their routines bring BASIC right up to the minute and deserves consideration by anyone trying to write serious professional programs. It delivers all its claims and it lightning fast. Second, If you are a BASIC "gamer" then you have probably already made a total commitment to fast sprite animation and to get speed you willingly accept, and claim to like, fuzzy sprites, blurred backgrounds, huge text, and corse lines. But then all games aren't fast, are they. Take Simm City for example. A low resolution version would hardly delight even those who like "warm" colors. You pays your money and y'u makes your choice. It is silly to argue which is "best" when the objective is not agreed on first. The point of my original remarks was directed to those trying to work with QBasic or QuickBASIC without external routines, and trying to get on screen results similar to the graphic rich screens common to all those programs loaded into his PC. This particular objective is most easily reached in high resolution, and graphic things made with tools they also have (free) if Windows is loaded. BSAVE and BLOAD statements are very powerful, quick, and designed to make graphics easy. BASIC how - to books never venture beyond the graphic commands inside the language to say, a paint program can also furnish graphics for BASIC. That important fact seems to get lost, but to some it might be good news as an alternative. Attached is Screen12.Zip. That file holds a tiny 2.4 K byte annotated QBasic fragment, Scr12.Bas, and two graphic pieces which the routine BLOADs. QBasic; no add ins, no memory addressing, no handmade arrays, no Include files, no libraries. Good luck with QNews. R. Aukerman , raukerman@compuserve.com
